Christchurch:

Indo-Swede Daniel Chopra shot a two-under 70 in the first round of the New Zealand Open golf tournament. Chopra, who lost in the play-off at the Australian Masters last week, was tied 14th.

Australian Craig Parry, took the first round lead with a four-under 68 as the first day was hit by howling winds and conditions which made scoring very difficult.

Parry shared the lead with Matthew Woods of England (68) and Paul Sheehan of Australia. Ten other shot three-under 69 and were lying fourth.

Chopra has been having a great season as he has won the Gin Sur Mer on the US PGA Tour and finished runner up in Melbourne last week.
