Arjun Atwal rode on a brilliant front-nine - studded with three birdies and an eagle - to card a four-under 68 for a share of the 13th spot after the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament here.
Overall, the Orlando-based Indian sank in four birdies and an eagle against a couple of bogeys in the opening round of the $6.1 million event.
In contrast, Indian-born Swede Daniel Chopra made a disastrous start, carding a three-over 75 to languish at the tied 152nd position.
Chopra stumbled to six bogeys against three birdies.
A 10th tee starter, Atwal was off to a subdued start as he parred the first four holes before he was pulled back by a bogey on the 14th. But the Indian managed a birdie on the 18th to make the turn even-par.
His front-nine started with a bogey on the very first hole but that was to be the only setback as Atwal hit a purple patch thereafter.
A sensational eagle on the par-five second hole was followed by birdies on the fourth, sixth and seventh as Atwal ended the day on a resounding note.
At the top, Americans Robert Garrigus and Dustin Johnson sizzled with flawless seven-under 65s to share the lead. The duo was followed a stroke behind by compatriot Rich Beem.
