Zinedine Zidane was crowned FIFA's World Player of the Year for the third time on Monday. The French midfielder claimed the award ahead of his compatriot Thierry Henry, with his Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo voted third. The 31-year-old has, by his own high standards, not had a spectacularly successful year, with Ronaldo the outstanding player in Real Madrid's run-in to their league title and Juventus knocking the Spanish giants out of the Champions League in the semi-finals. But in a poll of 142 international coaches, Zidane came out on top by a considerable margin. Having been voted in first place by 35 coaches, he earned 264 points overall - Thierry Henry of Arsenal was voted first by 21 coaches and collect 186 points while Ronaldo received 26 first-place votes for a total of 176 points. Zidane - who was then a Juventus player - won the award in 1998 after France won the World Cup, and again in 2000 after France were victorious in the European Championships. He became the world's most expensive player when he signed for Real Madrid for US$ 77 million in July 2002. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
