Alvaro Recoba, a 12-year veteran of the Uruguayan national team, was a surprise omission from manager Oscar Tabarez's 24-man roster announced on Friday in preparation for the country's World Cup qualifying opener against Bolivia next month.

While leaving Recoba out, Tabarez selected U20 striker Luis Suarez of Dutch club Ajax along with 23 other players, most playing abroad, for the early phase of qualifying for South Africa 2010.

The roster was made public on Friday ahead of Uruguay's clash October 13 at Centenario Stadium the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo amid the country's quest to return to the World Cup after failing to make Germany 2006.

Recoba had said he expected his lackluster performance at the Copa America in Venezuela earlier this year likely would be his send-off from the Uruguayan squad.

He had played several years in Europe, first at Inter and now at Torino, both in Italy.

Seeking to qualify for South Africa, Tabarez is seeking fresh talent, attracted by the inspiring play of Suarez, who has excelled with Ajax but will compete with Diego Forlan of Atletico of Madrid, who also was called up.

Also among those summoned were striker Sebastian Abreu, who plays for the Tigres of Mexico, defensive standout Diego Lugano of Turkey's Fenerbahce, and Diego Godin of Villarreal in Spain.

One other surprise included on the 24-man list was defender Martin Rodriguez, who plays in neighboring Argentina for River Plate.
