Bangkok:

South Korea's Park Eun-sun scored four goals to help her team to an 8-0 victory over Hong Kong in a Group A match of the Asian Football Confederation Women's Championship. In another Group A match, host Thailand defeated Singapore 3-0. The matches took place late yesterday, the first day of the tournament, which will run until June 21. The championship serves as qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003 scheduled to be held in the United States. Yesterday, the star of the night was Park who scored four goals after coming on as a substitute early in the second half. South Korea started aggressively by scoring the fastest goal of the tournament in the first minute of the match through Sung Hyun-ah. A double from Lee Ji-eun (46th minute) and a penalty by Lee Myung-hwa (59th) increased South Korea's lead before Park's four goals (62th, 65th 78th, 89th) ensured South Korea head Group A with a superior goal difference. Thailand went on the offensive from the start and scored their first goal through Kitiya Thiangtham in the 17th minute. Three minutes later, teammate Saranya Kaewka added on to Thailand's advantage with their second goal to leave Singapore with a difficult task of overturning the deficit. The Thais had to play the remainder of the match with 10 women as defender Thanyarat Bangklang was given the marching orders for a lunge on Singapore's Siti Azlinah. Midfielder Anootsara Maijarern completed Thailand's victory with a volley in the 63rd minute. (AP)
