Sao Paulo moved into a tie with Botafogo for first place in the Brazilian national championship after beating America-RN 1-0 on Sunday.

Sao Paulo moved into a tie with Botafogo for first place in the Brazilian national championship after beating America-RN 1-0 on Sunday.

The two teams are now tied with 28 points each. Botafogo, which lost 3-2 to Cruzeiro, has played one fewer game than Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo scored its only goal on Sunday in the 29th minute when Richalyson scored on a header off a corner kick by Jorge Wagner.

Cruzeiro managed to defeat Botafogo playing with only 10 men after Daniel was sent off in the 39th minute after pulling two yellow cards.

Guilherme opened the scoring for Cruzeiro in the 47th minute and scored again in the 81st minute after a goal by Wagner in the 77th.

Botafogo tried to come back with a goal by Andre Lima in the 86th minute and another by Renato Silva in the 92nd but by then it was too late.

Other matches

In the next round, Sao Paulo will play Juventude in a home game while Botafogo faces last place American-RN.

Playing in Brasilia because of the Pan American games in Rio, Fluminense and Figueirense played to 1-1 tie.

Somalia scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick in the 37th minute, but the celebration lasted exactly two minutes with Thiago Silva heading the ball in the 39th minute off a feed by Ruy.

In an away game, Internacional managed a 5-1 rout over Sport of Recife to secure fifth place, while Sport fell to 14th place.

Gremio remained in third place after a 1-1 draw with Atletico Parnanense in Saturday's play. Vasco is fourth after their 4-1 victory over Goias.

In other matches, 19th-place Flamengo only managed 2-2 tie with Corinthians extending the Rio team's run to nine games without a win.
