Madrid: Real Madrid beat Valencia 1-0 on Sunday to go four points clear at the top of the Spanish first division. It was a controversial start at the Bernabeu stadium. Valencia got a header in from Romanian international Adrian Ilie but it was ruled off side. Television replays, however, suggested that the decision was wrong. Valencia had another chance to score a free kick taken by Ruben Baraja but it was brilliantly pushed away by Real Madrid's goal keeper Iker Casillas. Real Madrid's first opening was created by Roberto Carlos whose cross found Raul but this infringement went unnoticed by the referee who didn't award a penalty. Real Madrid's corner resulted in yet another scoring opportunity but Valencia's Canizares pulled off what was undoubtedly the save of the match. And it was Canizares' counterpart who was really tested in the second half. Cassilas got well out of his area to head back a long ball but he had to rush back to his goal to make a double save from a long range Valencia effort from almost the half line. Real finally scored in the 72nd minute, Fernando Morietes getting his tenth goal of the season to give his team a 1-0 win. And after 20 games, Real are still top of the Spanish Primera Liga. They are four points ahead of Athletic Bilbao. Celta Vigo, Barcelona and Alaves round up the top five while unlucky Valencia are in sixth place.
