Hosts Punjab beat Assam 2-0 in the opening match of the 69th edition of National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Sunday.
The first goal for Punjab was scored by Prabhjot Singh. At half time, the scoreline was 1-0.
Punjab striker Rajbir Singh enhanced the lead to 2-0 when he scored another goal through a header 10 minutes after the interval.
Assam striker Suraj Mandal made several moves with William Gangte and Mintu Boro to reduce the lead but failed.

Players of the two teams braved rain which poured during the entire course of 90 minutes of play.
In Jalandhar, Delhi were held to a goalless draw by Railways to share a point each in Group B.
