Eindhoven, the Netherlands:Edison Mendez scored in the 61st minute on Tuesday to give PSV Eindhoven a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of the second round of the Champions League. Mendez controlled a pass from Arouna Kone and sent a long range shot into the bottom corner of Jens Lehmann's goal to cap a strong start to the second half by PSV. "We showed that if you believe in yourself, it is possible to beat a team the size of Arsenal," PSV coach Ronald Koeman said. "With this result, we have a good chance of going further in the Champions League." Arsenal was the stronger team in the first half but failed to turn its pressure into clear chances and struggled after the break. "Our passing went, our fluency went and we did not create nearly anything in the second half," Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said. "We lacked a little bit of rhythm." PSV defender Sun Xiang became the first Chinese player to play in the Champions League when he came on as a 66th-minute substitute for Manuel Da Costa. Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky and Alexander Hleb repeatedly threatened the PSV defense as they surged out of midfield. Rosicky came closest to scoring before the break when he exchanged passes with Thierry Henry in the 13th minute and sent a low shot that PSV goalkeeper Gomes got a hand to before Carlos Salcido cleared it from the line. Late in the first half, Henry had three shots, twice shooting at Gomes while his third effort curled wide. "Neither team created any big chances in the first half. I think we had more room in the second half," Koeman said. PSV started the second half much stronger and Kone had a chance in the 54th but he shot wide from close range after a long cross. Two minutes after Mendez scored, Philippe Senderos was given a yellow card for a deliberate handball that halted another quick PSV break. Gomes kept his team in the lead with a reflex save that turned a powerful shot from Fabregas over the bar in the 69th.
