If we look at the football world from a distance, it looks like a sky full of stars. Now add a galaxy to it!
Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the brightest stars of modern football, has a galaxy named after him. COSMOS Redshift 7 or CR7, as it's popularly known, is one of the oldest galaxies in the universe. It's said to have existed when the universe was only 800 million years old, i.e. some 13 billion years ago. (Portugal Drop 'Exhausted' Ronaldo)
The Portugal captain and the Real Madrid superstar was bestowed with the honour by the European Southern Observatory(ESO). Dr. David Sobral of the University of Lisbon confirmed that the name of the galaxy was inspired by Portugal's favourite son, Ronaldo. (Ronaldo Caught Urinating On the Streets)
According to Sobral, "The stars of CR7 has ultimately allowed us all to be here by fabricating heavy elements and changing the composition of the universe." (Ronaldo Tops Football's Marketing Charts)
The ESO described the CR7 galaxy as "by far the brightest galaxy yet found in the early Universe."
Ronaldo, who also has a line of underwear named after him, has been in sparkling form but his 48-goals were not enough to fetch Real Madrid a trophy this season. On the other hand, his rival Lionel Messi capped off a stellar season with an historic treble.
Ronaldo is a "Galatico" and has often astounded the football lovers with his out-of-the-world performances. His fans all over the globe have always locked horns with Messi fans in a battle for supremacy. Now, they can look up into the night sky and see a whole galaxy named after their favourite star and say - Messi may be from a different planet but CR7 is from a different galaxy!
