Still looking for a full time manager and with owner Mike Ashley still trying to sell the club, Newcastle made it four wins in a row under coach Chris Hughton to make it 13 points from five games.
That gave the Magpies a two-point advantage over second place West Bromwich Albion, the only team to score against them so far and stop them from winning. Both clubs were relegated from the Premier League last season.
Guthrie's winner came in the 52nd minute in front of 38,813 fans at St. James Park.
Monday's other game in the Championship between Peterborough and Crystal Palace ended 1-1.
