Former star player Pedja Mijatovic is resigning as sport director of Real Madrid.

Mijatovic said in a statement on the club's Web site Wednesday that he was giving up his seat by mutual consent ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

Mijatovic was appointed by former club president Ramon Calderon in 2006. Calderon resigned in January because of a vote-rigging scandal late last year.

Madrid lost its Spanish league title to rival Barcelona this season, but has already secured a spot in next season's Champions League.
