Mexico City:
Mexico President Vicente Fox went against the general discontent of his people by calling the national team's scoreless result with Angola at the World Cup on Friday "a good tie."
"Fortunately, we're still in there. It was a good tie that obliges us to win the next one,'' Fox said in a statement.
"The Mexican team's superiority was clear. They were on the verge of winning several times," the statement further said.
Only about 100 fans gathered at Mexico City's Independence Monument under leaden skies and rain to support their team.
"We came here to celebrate a victory, but it didn't happen, so I'm not celebrating anything. The match was all right, but they lacked better play," said 29-year-old fan Mario Munoz Morales.
A few dozen fans waving Mexican flags performed the traditional laps around the monument, in a traffic circle on one of the city's main boulevards, but there was little jubilation.
"They lacked more heart,'' said Silvia Rodriguez, who came to the monument with her eight-year-old daughter and 19-year-old niece.
Mexico became the provisional leader in Group D, but had played one more match than unbeaten Portugal.
El Tri retained an excellent chance of advancing through its last group match against Portugal next Wednesday, but the few fans at the monument hoped the team played much better. (AP)
