Bad referring is not new in football. Calling cops and complaining against the on-field officials may well be.
A Manchester United fan in Nottinghamshire was so overwrought by his team's loss against Real Madrid on Tuesday night that he went to the extent of calling the local police station to file a complaint against the on-field referee!
While the British press has been slamming Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir's for some of his decisions in the crucial Champions League match at Old Trafford - including sending off Nani, the Nottinghamshire police are not taking this fan's complaint too seriously. In a report on their official website, Nottingham Police department has now urged local residents to think before they dial the emergency numbers.
The law enforcers were forced to issue this guideline after the 18-year-old fan called them to protest against Nani being sent off for catching Real's Alvaro Arbeloa in the chest. Though the young enthusiast aplogised later saying he was swayed by the emotions of the moment which led him to believe the referee's decision was as bad as a crime, police in this UK county say it is not the first time they have been asked to take action against such incidents.
The website of the police department here says 6933 hoax calls were made last year. Officials have further warned that while the 18-year-old mentioned above was let off after he apologized, that calls of such nature ' are not jokes' and that they won't hesitate in prosecuting the offenders. And no, they did not mean the football referees!
