Milan:
Paolo Maldini, captain of Italy's national team, may delay his retirement from the "Azzurri'' at the request of coach Giovanni Trapattoni. The 34-year-old Maldini, who has played in more games for Italy (126) than anyone else, had said repeatedly that he would retire from the team after the World Cup. But following Italy's disastrous golden-goal loss to South Korea last month, Trapattoni asked his defensive stalwart if he would consider staying on for at least the initial qualifying stages of the 2004 European Championships. "I'll make known my decision in about 20 days," Maldini told Milan Channel on pay-television Tele Piu' on Monday. Italy's next match is a friendly against Slovenia August 21 in Trieste. Azerbaijan, Yugoslavia, Finland and Wales are in the "Azzurri's" qualifying group for the Euros, which will be held in Portugal. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
