London:
Liverpool escaped with a 1-0 victory at French side Auxerre, giving one of the favourites to win the UEFA Cup a slim edge going into next week's second-leg, fourth round games.
Defender Sami Hyypia scored for Liverpool in the 73rd, a precious away goal as the England side returns to Anfield.
Another favourite, Lazio, managed only a 3-3 draw at home against Polish side Wisla Krakow and had to rally with a goal by Claudio Lopez in the 71st minute.
Porto, Slavia Prague, Hertha Berlin, Panathinaikos and Celtic all picked up home victories in Europe's No. 2 club competition. Porto hammered Denizlispor 6-1, Hertha defeated Boavista 3-2, Panathinaikos drubbed Anderlecht 3-0, the Czechs edged Besiktas 1-0, and Celtic won 3-1 over a 10-man Stuttgart.
AEK drew 0-0 at Malaga. (AP)
