Leeds, England:
Dennis Wise was named Leeds' new manager on Tuesday, succeeding Kevin Blackwell who was fired on September 20. Wise moves from Swindon and takes assistant coach Gus Poyet with him. Wise, 39, made his name as a combative midfielder at Wimbledon and went on to captain Chelsea. Also joining Leeds from Swindon is goalkeeping coach Andrew Beasley. With former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates in control at Leeds, Wise became the top contender for the job after Blackwell was fired. "After much deliberation the unanimous choice was Dennis Wise and his assistant, Gus Poyet," Bates said. "I am aware that he may not be everybody's cup of tea, but this is not a popularity contest. "It is a question of the right man to resolve a serious situation." Leeds is struggling in the League Championship, the division just below the Premier League. It is 23rd in the 24-team league and just a point ahead of last-place Hull. Swindon, which plays two levels below Leeds, will miss Wise. He took over five months ago and has rejuvenated a struggling club. "They (Wise and Poyet) injected enthusiasm and a new level of fitness and professionalism into the team, and helped create an atmosphere of positivity in and around the County Ground," Swindon said in a statement. "Dennis and Gus were both offered improvements to their Swindon Town FC contracts, but they felt that the opportunity to manage at a higher level was the best move for both their careers and their families at this time."
