Klinsmann agrees to coach German team

Berlin:

Juergen Klinsmann has agreed to a two-year contract to coach Germany, the German Soccer Federation announced today. The former star striker, 39, will become the ninth coach of the three-time World Cup champions and the youngest in the country's history. "The subject of the continuing talks is now strictly about the sports side," said Harald Stenger, a spokesman for the German federation, or DFB. Klinsmann, one of the heros of Germany's 1990 World Cup team, is expected by many to start a major reform of the stodgy DFB in an effort to turn around slumping Germany's fortunes on the pitch. Klinsmann had made clear he is taking the job to produce a winning team by the 2006 World Cup, which Germany will host and badly wants to win. Several newspapers reported that Klinsmann has categorically rejected staying beyond July 9, 2006, when the World Cup final will take place. Klinsmann, who has no coaching experience, will have a coaching team to help him rebuild Germany, whose latest disappointment was a first-round exit at the Euro 2004. Holger Osieck will be his assistant coach, the same job he performed for Franz Beckenbauer, who guided the country to its last World Cup title in 1990. Oliver Bierhoff, Klinsmann's teammate on the German side that won Euro 1996, will take over the new post of team manager, a liaison between the coach, media and Bundesliga. Rudi Voeller, another hero of the 1990 World Cup winners, stepped down last month after Germany's poor performance in Portugal. (AP)
