The Brazilians who were at number one for over four years lost the top spot after a 2-0 defeat to Portugal last week in a friendly.
Italy last topped the rankings way back in November 1993.
Meanwhile the six teams below Italy and Brazil remain unchanged, with Argentina, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands and Portugal occupying spots three to eight.
