New Delhi:

The Indian team has defied the odds to win the Nehru Cup Football Tournament in Delhi, upsetting a much higher ranked Syrian team.

India took the lead in the 44th minute through N Pradeep who netted the only goal of the match.

India had lost to Syria in the league stages of this tournament but on this day they were also helped after the favourites were down to ten men in the 50th minute.

The Nehru Cup is being held in India after a decade and India who have never previously reached the final weren't expected to get this far let alone win the title.

India now play Lebanon in the World Cup qualifiers next month.
