Kolkata:
The final of the 107th IFA Shield Football tournament was abandoned midway today following violence between the players of East Bengal and Brazil's Palmeiras, with the latter refusing to play the match.
Palmeiras were leading 1-0, thanks to a Reinaldo De Souza strike, when the trouble started and coach Humberto Ferreira led his team out of the Salt Lake stadium 35 minutes into the first half.
After hectic parleys proved futile, match commissioner M K Krishnamurthy announced that the match had been called off.
The Indian Football Association has convened a meeting of the managers of the two teams tonight to decide the fate of the match. (PTI)
