Istanbul, Turkey:
Galatasaray beat Liverpool 3-2 on Tuesday to win its first game in Group C of the Champions League. Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler used his hip to score the first of his two goals in the 22nd minute, but Galatasaray responded with two goals in five minutes. Necati Ates beat Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek in the 24th and Okan Buruk put the hosts up 2-1 with a long-range volley in the 28th. Sasa Ilic scored Galatasaray's third in the 79th when he slid the ball home on a back pass by Mehmet Topal. Fowler scored his second goal for Liverpool in the 90th. Galatasaray dominated against a weakened Liverpool team. Reds manager Rafa Benitez had rested Steven Gerrard, Jose Pepe Reina, Sami Hyppia and Steve Finnan with qualification already assured. Galatasaray wingback Sabri Sarioglu twice came close to scoring. He didn't have enough power for a shot on open goal in the 43rd minute, and had another deflected wide in the 62nd. Umit Karan's header hit the post in the 53rd for the hosts, while Marcelo Carrusca's bicycle kick was saved by Dudek in the 73rd. Liverpool topped the group with 13 points, while Galatasaray finished last with four. Bordeaux, which beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in the other game, also has four points but now moves into the UEFA Cup.
