Lisbon:

Benfica announced Fernando Santos was its new coach on Saturday. Santos, a former coach at FC Porto, Sporting, Estoril and Estrela da Amadora, and Greek clubs Panathinaikos and AEK Athens, replaced Ronald Koeman, who left Benfica two weeks ago to coach PSV Eindhoven for the next two seasons. "I'm very happy,'' Santos said. "Our goal now is to win every trial, every match that we play, with hard work and dedication. Under Koeman, Benfica finished third in the 18-team standings - 12 points behind champion FC Porto and five back from Sporting Lisbon. The club will have to qualify for the Champions League next season. (AP)
