Sushant Mathew and Tolgay Ozbey scored a goal each to set up East Bengal's 2-1 victory over city rival Chirag United and achieve a runner-up finish in the I-League on Wednesday.
East Bengal, who finished the league with 51 points, were also helped by HAL's 4-2 win over Dempo, who took the third place with 50 points.
Mathew gave East Bengal the lead in the 18th minute while Ozbey consolidated the red and gold's position by netting one 20 minutes later.
Chirag United pulled one back with a second-half strike by Sunil Chhetri in the 63rd minute, but that did not prove to be enough.
Mathew struck with a fine left footer from a Mehtab Hossain pass at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
Mehtab was also instrumental in East Bengal's second goal as he set one up for Ozbey.
Chirag United fought back through Chhetri's left-footer, but failed to find the back of the net after that.
In the end, Subrat Bhattacharya's outfit, with 29 points from 26 matches, had to be content with an eighth-place finish.
