Sao Paulo:

Free-spending Corinthians, now adapting to life under former Argentina captain and coach Daniel Passarella, extended their unbeaten run to 10 games by beating Figueirense two-nil at home the first leg of a third round Copa do Brasil (Brazilian Cup) tie. Argentinean striker Carlos Tevez, signed for a record fee of $18 million from Boca Juniors earlier this season, opened the scoring from the penalty sport in injury-time at the end of the first half before Marcelo Mattos headed home the second midway through the second half at the Pacaembu Stadium in Sao Paulo. Corinthians became Brazil's wealthiest club when they signed a 10-year partnership with London-based Media Sport.
