Belgium and the Netherlands have formally submitted a joint bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Zurich, Switzerland:

Belgium and the Netherlands have formally submitted a joint bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

The two associations met with FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Wednesday to announce their bid, FIFA said in a statement. The two countries jointly hosted the 2000 European Championship.

Belgium and the Netherlands will likely face competition from England, which last month announced it would bid to host the event shortly after FIFA scrapped its policy of rotating the tournament among its confederations.

China, Australia, Mexico, the United States, Russia and Spain have also indicated their interest in hosting the 2018 tournament.

"It says everything about the popularity of football in general and the FIFA World Cup in particular that we already have concrete proposals for the 2018 World Cup," Blatter said.

The host for the 2018 tournament will be announced by FIFA's executive committee in 2011.
