Cape Town:

Chasing a target of 139, Zimbabwe pulled off a spectacular five-wicket victory against Australia in the ICC World Twenty20 Group B encounter at Durban on Wednesday.

The Zimbawean team raced on the field engulfing each other after Brendon Taylor - 60 not out off 45 balls - hit the winning shot to seal an enthralling win for the minnows.

Earlier, Vusi Sibanda and Brendon Taylor set the tone for the chase with a 31-run opening partnership before the former was caught behind by Adam Gilchrist on Nathan Bracken delivery for 23. Chamu Chibhabha(15) was next to be caught by Gilchrist off Stuart Clark.

Gilchrist grabbed his third catch of the day by dismissing Tatenda Taibu(0) when the batsman lofted a Mitchell Johnson delivery.

Before rain suspended play for half an hour, Zimbabwe lost another wicket in the form of Stuart Matsikenyeri(3) when he was caught by 'safe-hands' Gilchrist and added a second wicket to Clark's tally.

Brendon Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza put up a 53-run partnership to give Zimbabwe a realistic chance of having a go at the world champions even when the asking rate kept soaring.

Earlier, Australia closed their innings at 138 for nine after electing to bat against Zimbabwe.

Elton Chigumbura got Zimbabwe off to dream start as he nailed the dangerous Matthew Hayden on the fouth delivery of the match for just four runs.

Chigumbura struck in his consecutive over to dispatch Adam Gilchrist for the same score. Ricky Ponting then fell to Gary Brent as Chigumbura took his catch dismissing him for 8.

The Austrailian run rate was quite stagnant even though Andrew Symonds and Mike Hussey tried their best to retain their strike. But Hussey was then run out by Vusi Sibanda for 15.

Symonds tried to build some tempo with some big shots but was stumped by Brendon Taylor off a Hamilton Masakadza ball for 33. Brad Haddin tried hard but was stopped by Prosper Utseya when he got caught by Chigumbura.

Brett Lee came and went without making much of a difference, scoring 12 runs before being bowled by Brent. Mitchell Johnson was then run out by wicket-keeper Taylor for 9. Nathan Bracken(4) was caught by Sibanda on the last ball by Chigumbura.
