Wankhede Stadium restructuring gets into controversy

Plans to revamp the Wankhede Stadium for the 2011 World Cup final have apparently run into trouble with the Heritage Committee.

Mumbai:

The restructuring of parts of the Wankhede Stadium to improve its facilities for hosting the 2011 World Cup matches, including the final, has reportedly run into trouble with the Heritage Committee set to oppose the plan to raise its height to accommodate more spectators.

"We have not taken any decision on the proposal (received from Wankhede owners Mumbai Cricket Association to increase the height of the stadium). No member has written to me opposing it," Heritage Committee Chairman Sharad Upasani told PTI while reacting to newspaper reports.

The proposal for restructuring the stadium in South Mumbai has been sent to the Committee as it falls in the proposed heritage area of the scenic Queen's Necklace in Marine Drive.

MCA sources, when approached, wondered how raising the height of the stadium could be opposed by the panel as they felt it would, in no way, affect the view from the periphery of the arena.

"Only if you go deep into the sea will the stadium, after it undergoes renovation, be visible but not from close as it's surrounded by tall buildings," they said.

Significantly the architect in charge of the stadium's redevelopment, Sashi Prabhu, is a member of the Heritage Committee, they added.
