Skipper Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten on 149 and Chaminda Vaas was on 46, the pair having shared an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 97.
England are seeking a series-levelling win after losing the first Test in Kandy. The second Test in Colombo was drawn.
