Right then! The ODI series has kicked off in style with both teams giving it their all but in the end it was India who came out roaring. Both teams will now clash for the second ODI on 19th January, 2017 in Cuttack at 1330 IST. Do join us for the same. Until then, it's goodbye from us. Cheers!
MAN OF THE MATCH, KEDAR JADHAV starts by saying it's a great feeling as his contribution helped India win the game and that too in front of his home crowd. Credits his skipper for his innings and says that he is inspired by the way Kohli goes about his business during a run chase. He admits that running between the wickets with Kohli isn't easy at all and also informs that his cramps are fine now.
INDIAN SKIPPER, VIRAT KOHLI is really happy with this chase and says it will take some time to sink in. He is elated that from 63/4 they chased down 350 in spite of the opposition having four quick bowlers. Praises Jadhav for his rollicking effort and credits him for the temperament he showed. Shares that he said to Jadhav to just stay there and England shall panic which eventually happened. Continues praising Kedar by saying that getting a ton at number 6 requires guts and this should be a special moment for him. On India's bowling, he replies that it was a placid pitch and they went for too many towards the end. Ends by crediting the English side for giving a good fight and thanks the crowd as well for supporting.
ENGLISH SKIPPER, EOIN MORGAN is a bit disappointed with what just happened. Mentions about the fluent partnership between Kohli and Jadhav which took the game away from them. Adds even 350 is not enough and feels they didn't play their best today. Credits Stokes for putting his hand up during the business end of the innings with the bat. Ends by saying that they would look to put a better show next time.
A great beginning for Virat Kohli as the permanent skipper in ODIs! The chase master once again was in his elements and one cannot undermine the importance of Kedar Jadhav, who also stroked a valuable century. The local lad batted with great pace and never allowed the pressure to mount on his skipper. However, he was not very swift between the wickets, he had the strokes to make up for it. Overall, India will be pleased with the outcome of this match where they were once tottering on 4 for 63. For the record, this was Kohli's 15th hundred in a successful ODI chase, the most by any batsman, going past Sachin Tendulkar. What a player!
England will be distraught at the moment! They put up a brave batting show to pile on a big total and their bowlers got them off to a brilliant start as well. The visiting team had India on the mat after picking four wickets quickly but then had no answers to Kohli and Jadhav's brilliance. The English team though got a sniff once they broke the big stand but failed to capitalize. Stokes, Ball and Willey were among the wickets but they weren't effective enough in creating pressure.
What a run chase from India! They have scaled a gigantic target to go 1-0 up in the 3-match ODI series. They stuttered early on in the chase but the superlative 200-run partnership between Kohli and Jadhav brought the run chase back on track. Things got tensed towards the end when both these batsmen got out, but India's lower order batsmen held their nerves and dragged the home team beyond the finish line. Hardik Pandya towards the end showed great maturity and Ashwin sealed the deal with a biggie. This is India's second highest successful run chase in ODIs.
Moeen Ali to Ravichandran Ashwin
SIX! That will do! Ashwin says even I want to chip one and sends this loopy ball down the ground over long on for a maximum. A glory finish to an emphatic chase. INDIA WIN BY 3 WICKETS! Kohli is all smiles and he would be happy about the fact that his side hasn't let him down. Customary handshakes all around.
Adil Rashid to Hardik Pandya
SIX! Up and over! Loopy leg spinner outside off, Pandya stands put and hits it cleanly over extra cover for a maximum all the way. Scores are leveled!
NOT OUT! Pandya survives! Full length ball outside off, Pandya taps it towards the off side and they take a single. There is a shy at the bowler's end by Stokes and it hits. The ball deflects towards mid-wicket and they try to take another one. The fielder once again fires a throw to Buttler who takes the bails off. It is referred upstairs and replays show Pandya has made it in. So, two runs added to the total.
A run out appeal against Pandya is taken upstairs. His body language shows, he has made it in. Let's wait and find out...
Adil Rashid to Ravichandran Ashwin
Ashwin eases it down to long off for another single. Doing it nicely is Ash.
Tossed up around off, Pandya tries to smash it through the off side but mistimes it. Doesn't matter as the ball goes past extra cover and they take a single.
Loopy leg spinner around off, Ashwin drives it past covers for a single.
Drifting in from around middle, it's bunted back to the leggie.
Adil Rashid is brought back into the attack! 12 needed from 18!
Jake Ball to Hardik Pandya
Short of a length ball outside off, Hardik taps it towards the off side and sets off. Ashwin sends him back in time as the fielder from point was too quick to the ball. A dot ball to end the over.
Jake Ball to Ravichandran Ashwin
Fuller on the pads, flicked towards deep backward square leg for a single.
Ashwin is showing the intent here! He's not a good runner but wants the second and gets it. Ashwin gets his drive past covers and hurries for a brace.
Fuller in length and around off, Ash drives it but finds the cover fielder.
