Rabada comes running in and lands it on a length around off, it angles away a touch from the batsman who does not account for it. Khawaja tries to keep it out but the ball takes the edge and flies towards first slip. De Kock dives full stretch to his left and takes a one-handed catch. Kagiso strikes in his first over and Khawaja's struggle away from home continues...  39/2

To be honest, it is not a wicket-taking delivery by any means but Maharaj wouldn't mind it at all. He drops it short and sends it quicker through the air outside off, Smith feels he has a scoring opportunity as he tries to cut it. The ball though takes the outside edge, hits the glove of the keeper and lobs up towards first slip where AB de Villiers does not drop it. Tell you what, Smith was Maharaj's first Test wicket and now he gets him again here. The hosts are extremely delighted as they have broken the backbone of the Australian team. Many times, when nothing much is going for your side, you can come in and pick up wickets by using your guile. That is exactly what Maharaj has done here. Maharaj tosses this one up generously on middle and slows down the pace as well, around 82 kph. Cummins looks to cover the line, thinking it will spin away, but it doesn't. Because Cummins has covered the line to meet the ball around off, he has left a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball does not spin, goes straight on and threads that gap between bat and pad. Timber. The highest scorer for Australia in the warm-up game prior to this one has departed cheaply. Did he play against his natural game? Or was he forced to? Should he have played a few shots? 101.4 OUT! A wicket at the stroke of lunch again! Yesterday, it was David Warner. Today, it is Mitchell Starc. Both southpaws. But a much-needed breakthrough for the Proteas. Starc was taking this game away from them and his wicket was badly needed. Full and outside off, Starc lunges to defend but the ball spins in. Mitchell has the line covered but while he stretches to defend, his bat hits his pads, hence does not meet the ball. Off it goes, right on to hit the sticks, bringing Maharaj on the verge of another 5-wicket haul. LUNCH ON DAY 2!  300/8

Lyon telegraphs his intentions to go down the ground and Maharaj smartly tosses this wide outside off. Lyon looks to go inside out but only skews this up high in the air. 7.2 OUT! It has taken just two balls for Lyon to make an impact! He has pulled out a stunning return catch. Does anyone remember him dismissing Moeen Ali in the Ashes? If you do, this is something similar to that. He tosses it up around middle and leg, it dips in as Elgar looks to flick it across the line but gets a leading edge back towards the direction of the bowler. Lyon dives full stretch to his right and grabs it beautifully to draw first blood. Australia needed this wicket after a quick start from the hosts.  27/1

Just now Michael Holding on air was discussing as to it will require something really special on the part of the bowler if he wants to bring the short leg fielder into the picture on this sluggish track. Here is an example! Pat hits the deck hard, not for the first time though. But this is the one that brings him the rewards. He gets the extra bounce and puts Aiden Markram into a tangle. Lyon drops it on a good length area, it spins back in with a bit of extra bounce. Goes wide of the crease from around the wicket, angles it in outside off, makes Faf du Plessis take some more feel. The South African skipper falls in the trap as the ball tails away ever so slightly to take the feather and settle into the mitts of Tim Paine who takes a good low catch. Big wicket, sorry if you are a Protea fan, this innings could be wrapped up today itself.  92/4

33.1 OUT! Nicked and taken! Splendid bowling from Starc in this extended spell. He goes wider of the crease to create the angle that he wants. Drifts it in and then gets it to jag away. Bruyn looks to drive it through the line but the away movement gets the better of him. An edge is induced and Paine behind the stumps dives forward to grab a lovely low catch. Half the home side back in the hut and it trails by 7 short of 250 runs.  108/5

45.1 OUT! The GOAT roars! Don't look into too much about me challenging nature. Lyon is not actually a goat but has been nicknamed G.O.A.T - Greatest of all time - at least amongst Aussie spinners. And he has relieved some of the tension on Steven Smith's face by breaking this dangerous stand. The last few overs have been very frugal by Australia - just 5 in the last 4 - and the pressure building has told. Lyon keeps it in line of the stumps and de Kock looks to angle it down to third man. It is a big error in judgement. He thinks the ball will turn away but this is the slider. Goes straight on. Past the bat and onto the stumps. Remember that leading edge from AB? We had written - another day, another batsman would have got. Well, we need not have to wait for another day, only AB could have survived after this misjudgement. A fantastic innings cut short. 49.3 OUT! Caught behind! The swing king does it again! For the second time today, Starc has struck in the first over of his spell. The only time he missed was the first spell of the innings. What a delivery. He comes around the wicket, that too, from a wide angle. Lands it around off and Philander looks to flick. But the ball reverses away, takes the leading edge and Tim Paine takes a dolly behind. Certainly don't remember a batsman getting dismissed caught behind off a leading edge. 50.3 OUT! Timberrrrr! Hazlewood gets his first. And he gets it in some style. He lands it outside off, Maharaj looks to cover the line but he is beaten by pace. 141 clicks that ball. Add reverse swing. Total equals zero probability of playing it. The stumps are a mess. Australia looking at a sizeable lead now.  159/8

51.2 OUT! It looked stone dead to the naked eye and it is completely dead according to the Hawk Eye. Plumb LBW. Full and outside off, reversing in a long way, Rabada misses his flick, is beaten by pace completely and hit on the pads. Starc appeals and up goes umpire Dharmasena's finger. Rabada takes the review but it is a futile one. Hawk Eye shows it to be crashing into leg stump.  162/9

51.4 OUT! Michelle for Mitchell!!! Boy, he has wrapped this innings up in a jiffy. Very rarely do you see an Aussie bowler get a fifer these days given the quality of the entire unit. The four main bowlers usually share wickets equally but when Starc is on song, very few dance well. Another instance of reverse, tailing in late from outside off, Morkel looks to defend but misses it completely. The ball hits his back pad and shatters the off stump. 26.1 OUT! Stumped! Cameron Bancroft's fruitful innings comes to an end! Beautiful bowling again from Maharaj! He sees Bancroft giving the charge and smartly drags his length short and serves it wider outside off. Cameron tries to reach to the pitch of the ball to defend but the ball spins past the outside edge and de Kock behind the stumps takes the bails off calmly. A wicket just when the lunch is approaching.  108/3

13.1 OUT! South Africa get a breakthrough! Warner stands there in dismay and slowly trudges off. Rabada comes from around the wicket and drops it on a shorter length on middle at 148 kph. Warner stays back and looks to take him on with a pull shot. Is a bit cramped for room and as a result drags it off the inner half towards short mid on where the substitute fielder, Willem Mulder takes a simple catch. Some rejoice for the hosts but Australia ahead by 245 runs.  56/1

18.1 OUT! Off the gloves, yes! Usman Khawaja has to walk back. More rejoice for South Africa and it's Maharaj who gets his sixth of the game. He tosses it up outside off, Khawaja out of nowhere attempts for the reverse sweep. Misses and it seemed to be lobbed off the gloves straight up and de Kock takes a dolly. South Africa keep appealing but umpire S Ravi stays unmoved. Faf du Plessis after a while, opts for the DRS. First replay is enough to detect that it has hit the glove. The on-field call is overturned and finally a successful review for the hosts in this game. Australia effectively are 260 for 2!  71/2

41.4 OUT! It's pitching in line and hitting the stumps! In the previous innings, Smith missed out on a ton this time he misses out on a fifty. How rare a sight that is? Cunning bowling change from Faf du Plessis, says Mike Haysam on air. Elgar is all over the moon at the moment as he has netted the big, big fish. He keeps it full on the stumps, Smith gets across to swipe it across the line but misses to get hit on the pads. They keep appealing and umpire Dharmasena raises his finger after a thought. Marsh departs after playing one short of a century in terms of balls. Was run-scoring difficult? Or did South Africa make run-scoring difficult? Only time will tell. 47.1 OUT! Edged and gobbled by Amla at first slip! Well, it's a milestone for Hashim as well - 100 Test catches for him! Once again Kagiso Rabada delivers for his side. He lands it on a back of a length outside off, just a bit of away movement but Mitchell Marsh on seeing the length decides to punch it through the line. Gets an outside edge and it flies into the safe hands of Amla. 245 reads the Australia lead now.  156/5

76.1 OUT! Mitchell Marsh has provided the breakthrough! What a move from Steven Smith. Not to get Marsh back on but to ask Tim Paine to stand up to the stumps. And what a catch, my word. The entire crowd at Kingsmead stands up and applauds. Take a bow. Aiden Markram has arrived. A superstar is born. Nothing special on the ball, on a length outside off, Markram looks to run it down to third man but only ends up guiding it straight into Paine's gloves. Amla has this habit of walking across his stumps and Hazlewood has a habit of bowling straight. In that scenario, the batsman cannot afford to miss the ball. Amla misses. Is hit on the pads and Hazlewood appeals. He is on his haunches, yet Dharmasena does not budge. Then, after what seems like a heart-pounding 5 seconds, he raises his finger! Amla walks across to his partner, perhaps he says he is not sure. Amla says it is okay, I shall review it. It is very close. Judgemental call. Umpire Dharmasena's judgement has saved South Africa a review. But not the wicket. Hawk Eye shows it to be clipping the top of middle and leg. Could have been given not out, could have been given out. The bounce on this pitch, well... but that looked out to the naked eye. Two big wickets for Australia in the first hour.  39/2

12 OUT! AB DE VILLIERS HAS BEEN RUN OUT FOR A DUCK! Oh dear... what a terrible piece of miscommunication. In Mumbai, certain railway lines do not function on Sundays and public holidays due to a mega block. That is the term that can be used to what has happened here - Mega block in communication. Around off, Markram goes back and works it towards square leg and initially calls for the single. AB de Villiers is quick to respond and comes halfway down the track but now Markram sees David Warner charge to the ball and changes his call. Too late. AB slips a bit and by the time he turns, cannot beat the fiery throw from Warner to Lyon. Easy run out.  39/3

16.3 OUT! The off stump is gone for a walk! South Africa are 4 down now and staring down a deeeeeeeeep barrel. What a jaffa from Cummins though. He lands this on a length outside off, Faf comes forward to defend but there is a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball goes right through that gap and sends the off stump cartwheeling. Starc trying too hard, Lyon not getting any. Cummins not tried but it is Hazlewood who strikes! He lands this on a good length outside off, could have been left alone but a tentative Theunis decides to play at that, looking to defend. But the ball suddenly bounces sharply, gets big on him, takes the outside edge and Tim Paine does the rest. The 87-run stand has been broken and the Aussies are pumped up again. Second wicket for Hazlewood. Tough luck for de Bruyn, did all the hard work but eventually has been dismissed.  136/5
