Abdullah Shafique | 7 | 14 | 0 | 0 | 50 |
st Tom Blundell b Ajaz Patel
3.3 OUT! STUMPED! Early success for the Kiwis. This is beautiful bowling from Ajaz Patel. He immediately got into the rhythm. A couple of great deliveries beat the bat of Abdullah Shafique and Ajaz smartly drags his length a bit back on the third delivery and keeps it just around off. Shafique tries to use his feet to smother the spin but fails to reach the pitch of the ball. He tries to defend but again the ball spins past his blade and Tom Blundell wastes no time in flicking the bails off. Outstanding flight and length of the ball there and Abdullah Shafique was completely at sea. 12/1

Imam-ul-Haq | 24 | 38 | 5 | 0 | 63.15 |
c Tim Southee b Michael Bracewell
15 OUT! CAUGHT! Are Pakistan trying to emulate 'Bazball'? If they are, somebody should tell them that they are failing miserably. Yet another questionable shot selection. Flighted delivery, full and on middle, Imam skips down to heave it across the line but gets it away from the outer portion of his blade. The ball flies towards mid off where Tim Southee is ready to gulp it in his safe hands. Trying to be over-aggressive against the spinners is costing Pakistan at the moment. They are 48 for 3 which could have been four had Babar been caught on the third ball of this over. 48/3

|||||
Shan Masood | 3 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 30 |
st Tom Blundell b Michael Bracewell
6.1 OUT! ANOTHER STUMPING! Hard to understand what Shan Masood was trying to do since his arrival at the crease. It's spinning and he was looking to use his feet to smother the spin but premeditation in charging the bowler is never a good idea, especially so early in the innings. Michael Bracewell sticks to his line just outside off and offers a good flight to his delivery. Shan Masood runs down the track to heave it across the line but the ball spins away to beat his bat. Just like Abdullah Shafique, Shan was also nowhere near the pitch of the delivery. Tom Blundell is once again alert with his glovework. Poor from Pakistan. The approach is questionable. 19/2
|
|||||
Babar Azam C | 161 | 280 | 15 | 1 | 57.50 |
c Tom Blundell b Tim Southee
90.4 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Early success for New Zealand and they have netted the big fish. Babar Azam departs without adding anything to his overnight score. A lazy attempt from him. He kept his patience on the last two deliveries but goes for a waft at the third one. Southee has served it on a good length outside off at 127.4 clicks. To be honest, it's quite a harmless delivery, could have been easily left alone but the Pakistan skipper throws his hands at it and nicks it behind. Maybe, the scrambled seam offered Tim some extra lift from the pitch. Tom Blundell does the rest and New Zealand have an opening early in the day. 318/6
|
|||||
Saud Shakeel | 22 | 34 | 2 | 0 | 64.70 |
c Henry Nicholls b Tim Southee
29 OUT! CAUGHT! Another blow to Pakistan. Tim Southee strikes at the stroke of Lunch and it's yet another loose attempt from a Pakistan batter. This one is fuller and outside off at 132.6 kph, it moves away a tad at the last moment. Saud Shakeel looks to drive it but hits it uppishly towards Henry Nicholls at gully. He takes a comfortable catch and Pakistan lose their fourth wicket. Smart move from the skipper to bring himself on and also his strategy to get the batter driving pays off. 110/4
|
|||||
Sarfaraz Ahmed Wk | 86 | 153 | 9 | 0 | 56.20 |
c Daryl Mitchell b Ajaz Patel
85.3 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! This time Daryl Mitchell hangs onto it as he redeems himself. Ajaz Patel gives some extra pace on this delivery, serves it at 91.6 kph and gets it to drift in around off. Sarfaraz Ahmed looks to drive this full ball with hard hands but all he manages is an outside edge. It goes quickly to Daryl Mitchell at first slip who takes a good low catch. The umpires get together to check whether it's a clean catch and refer it upstairs. The replays find that all is good and Sarfaraz Ahmed has to depart after a 196-run stand with Babar Azam. 306/5
|
|||||
Agha Salman | 103 | 155 | 17 | 0 | 66.45 |
lbw b Tim Southee
130.5 OUT! That's plumb in front! Tim Southee fires in a length ball, around middle, at 131.6 kph, Agha Salman clears his front leg for a big swipe across the line but misses and is rapped on the back leg. They appeal and the finger has gone up. Salman takes the DRS but to no avail. No bat is involved and it's crashing onto the middle stump, confirms the Ball Tracking. Pakistan are all out for 438! 438/10
|
|||||
Nauman Ali | 7 | 75 | 1 | 0 | 9.33 |
c Michael Bracewell b Neil Wagner
116.5 OUT! TAKEN! Excellent one-handed catch from Michael Bracewell. The short ball does the trick for Neil Wagner. Bowls it around off, Nauman Ali pulls it but doesn't get it away from the sweet spot of his bat. The ball flies towards square leg where Michael Bracewell takes a one-handed catch stretching to his left. Nauman Ali departs and the gritty stand has been broken at the stroke of Lunch! 372/7
|
|||||
Mohammad Wasim | 2 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 40 |
c Tom Blundell b Ish Sodhi
118 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! A good reflex catch from the keeper. Ish Sodhi delivers it slightly short and on middle and leg, Mohammad Wasim looks for the scoop again but ends up gloving it behind. The ball lobs up in the air, and Tom Blundell reacts well to gather the catch safely. 375/8
|
|||||
Mir Hamza | 1 | 15 | 0 | 0 | 6.66 |
lbw b Ish Sodhi
126 OUT! Given lbw! Mir Hamza has straightaway reviewed the decision. A tossed-up delivery, landing full around off and turning back in. Hamza prods forward to defend but is beaten and is rapped on the front pad. They appeal and the finger goes up. DRS time! There is no bat involved, confirms the UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that the impact is with the umpire's call and it's hitting the stumps. The on-field decision stays and Hamza returns after a vital 39-run stand with Agha Salman. 414/9

c sub Kamran Ghulam b Abrar Ahmed
69.5 OUT! CAUGHT! Tom Latham's fine knock has come to an end and Pakistan have a timely breakthrough just at the stroke of Lunch. Abrar Ahmed delivers a full ball around middle and gets it to spin down the leg side, Latham goes down to play his favourite reverse sweep but this time it takes his gloves and loops behind the keeper. Kamran Ghulam (sub) moves across to his right from first slip and takes the simplest of catches. Latham is disappointed on his way back. New Zealand trail by 207 runs. The replays show that after brushing the gloves, it took Tom's forearm as well and that's why the ball ballooned more. 231/2

Devon Conway | 92 | 176 | 14 | 0 | 52.27 |
lbw b Nauman Ali
53 OUT! LBW! Finally, Pakistan have a breakthrough and it's Nauman who has done it. It's nicely looped up and lands around off, turns back in sharply and catches Conway on the back foot. He attempts to work it on the leg side but misses and is rapped on the pads. The finger stays down as they appeal and Pakistan take the referral. Perhaps turning too much there! UltraEdge takes some time to load. It shows that there is some murmur when the ball is close to the inside edge of the bat. The third umpire spends some time on it and then finds out that there is a tiny gap between the bat and ball. So no bat is involved. Ball Tracking goes on to suggest that it's hitting the stumps. The on-field decision is reversed and Conway departs, missing out on his hundred. A great review from Pakistan. 183/1

80.2 OUT! CHOPPED ON! Poor shot selection and Henry Nicholls departs. This one lands outside off on the rough and turns back in quite sharply, it keeps a shade low as well. Henry Nicholls looks to cut it buts gets a thick inside edge and the ball shatters the stumps. Henry Nicholls returns with New Zealand trailing by 166 runs. 272/3

|||||
Daryl Mitchell | 42 | 47 | 7 | 1 | 89.36 |
c Sarfaraz Ahmed b Abrar Ahmed
94.4 OUT! CAUGHT! Another Kiwi batter falls gloving his attempted reverse sweep. Abrar tosses it up around off, gets a hint of turn with some extra bounce, Daryl Mitchell looks to play the reverse batted shot but fails to connect and the ball hits his gloves. It lobs up in the air and Sarfaraz Ahmed moves forward to take a simple catch. The bowler had turned to appeal for an lbw but then found out that it was off the gloves and caught. The finger is up and Daryl Mitchell starts to walk. Kane Williamson just checks with him whether he is sure, Mitchell nods and returns. 337/4

|||||
Tom Blundell Wk | 47 | 116 | 3 | 1 | 40.51 |
lbw b Mohammad Wasim
127 OUT! LBW! Pakistan have got success in the session and Tom Blundell's lucky stay at the crease is over. The ball is reversing and Mohammad Wasim makes full use of it. He hurls it on a length around off and gets it to nip back in sharply. Tom Blundell fails to keep it out and is rapped on the back leg. They appeal and the finger goes up. Tom Blundell and Kane Williamson have a chat and then the former walks back. Only an inside edge could have saved him which was absent. The 90-run stand is broken. New Zealand trail by 11 runs. The UltraEdge, later on, shows that it's touch and go and there could have been an inside edge before it hit the back pad. New Zealand will feel that Tom should have reviewed the decision. 427/5

Michael Bracewell | 5 | 13 | 1 | 0 | 38.46 |
c Mohammad Wasim b Abrar Ahmed
131.5 OUT! TAKEN! Tossed up, on off, some extra bounce. Michael Bracewell looks to flick it across the line but the ball hits the upper part of his bat and lobs up towards mid off. Mohammad Wasim settles under it and takes a sitter. Pakistan are making the move late in the day. The deficit is 2 runs. 436/6
|
|||||
Ish Sodhi | 65 | 180 | 11 | 0 | 36.11 |
c Babar Azam b Abrar Ahmed
186.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Pakistan have their first wicket of the day but the stand between Ish Sodhi and Kane Williamson has done the damage. Floated delivery, full and on middle at 81.7 kph, Ish Sodhi attempts to take on the leg spinner and tries to heave it across the line. But it comes off from the top half of his blade and flies behind the bowler. Babar Azam is there at mid off and he takes the catch safely. New Zealand lead by 157 runs and still have three wickets remaining. 595/7

|||||
Tim Southee C | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Shan Masood b Nauman Ali
187.3 OUT! Southee holes out! Pakistan have two wickets in no time, something to smile about for the home audience. Tossed up, full and around middle and off, Tim Southee gives the charge for a big shot but his bottom hand comes off the handle and the ball flies from the bottom part of his bat. It's a simple catch for Shan Masood at long off. Williamson is 15 away from his double century but is running out of partners now. 596/8

Neil Wagner | 8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Agha Salman b Abrar Ahmed
189 OUT! TAKEN! Abrar has yet another 5-wicket haul in Tests, it has been a long hard toil but it has paid dividends. Flighted and full, around off, Wagner again attempts to play the reverse sweep but this time it catches his gloves and loops behind the keeper. Agha Salman takes a simple catch moving across from slip. This is the third wicket gone done in this manner in this inning. New Zealand lead by 159 runs. 597/9

19.5 OUT! TAKEN! Abdullah Shafique departs and New Zealand have a breakthrough in the game. This is fuller and on off, Abdullah Shafique advances down the track and looks to heave across the line but the ball hits the inside part of his bat. It carries aerially towards mid on where Glenn Phillips (sub) takes an excellent tumbling catch to his left. New Zealand will hope that this will open the floodgates. Only one question for Abdullah - What was the need? He has some explaining to do for both of his dismissals in this Test match. 47/1

Imam-ul-Haq | 96 | 206 | 10 | 1 | 46.60 |
st Tom Blundell b Ish Sodhi
71.5 OUT! STUMPED! The century was playing in Imam's mind and that got the better of him. The third wicket goes down for Pakistan after Lunch and they are staring down the barrel. Ish Sodhi has a fifer and he has made his comeback to this format memorable. Hurls across a well-disguised googly, lands it on the rough outside off, Imam-ul-Haq skips down the track, looking to flick it away but the ball spins away from his bat with some extra bounce. It's a great take from Tom Blundell to his left as he stretches his arms sideways and then breaks the stumps to find Imam short of the crease. Pakistan's inning has nosedived after Lunch and they are now effectively 32 for 7. Imam is frustrated on his way to the dressing room and is seen hitting a chair with his bat. 206/7

Shan Masood | 10 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 38.46 |
lbw b Ish Sodhi
28.4 OUT! LBW! New Zealand have another wicket and they are celebrating. Ish Sodhi hurls across a fuller delivery around off, getting it to turn into the batter, Shan is caught on the back foot when he should have been forward as he tries to work it across the line. He misses and there is a loud shout for an lbw. The finger has gone up. Shan Masood has a clueless look on his face. He walks up to his partner and then takes the DRS at the last moment. UltraEdge detects nothing and the Ball Tracking shows that it's clipping the leg stump. Umpire's call and Pakistan lose their second wicket. They trail by 103 runs. 71/2

Nauman Ali | 4 | 15 | 1 | 0 | 26.66 |
lbw b Michael Bracewell
33.3 OUT! Given lbw! If there is no bat involved, it's gone. Nauman Ali has a word with his partner and then returns to the pavilion. Beautiful delivery from Michael Bracewell. He serves it full around middle and gets it to straighten a shade after landing. Nauman Ali leans forward to defend but it beats his bat and pings him on the front pad. The finger goes up and New Zealand have struck early by removing the nightwatchman. Pakistan trail by 92 runs. 82/3
|
|||||
Babar Azam C | 14 | 21 | 2 | 0 | 66.66 |
lbw b Ish Sodhi
39.1 OUT! LBW! Babar Azam looks very adjacent to the stumps here. He has a nervous look on his face, has a word with his partner and then takes the DRS. Ish Sodhi begins with a short delivery, landing around off and turning back into the batter along with staying a bit low. Babar Azam goes deep inside the crease to pull it across the line. But he misses and is struck on the pads. They appeal and the finger goes up. This one looks plumb and the Ball Tracking tells the same. First there was no bat on the UltraEdge and the ball is hitting the leg stump. Sodhi has hit the jackpot with his first delivery of the day and it's a body blow to Pakistan. They trail by 74 runs. 100/4

Sarfaraz Ahmed Wk | 53 | 76 | 7 | 0 | 69.73 |
c Tom Blundell b Ish Sodhi
63.3 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Fifty and out for Sarfaraz Ahmed and he walks off bitterly disappointed. Ish Sodhi serves a short delivery outside off and gets it to spin away from the batter at 81.5 kph, Sarfaraz Ahmed goes chasing after it but it takes the toe end of his bat and settles into the gloves of Tom Blundell. Good reaction by the keeper, he though was not appealing at all. The others appeal and the finger goes up. Pakistan have now lost half their side and are ahead by only 11 runs. 185/5
|
|||||
Agha Salman | 6 | 14 | 1 | 0 | 42.85 |
b Ish Sodhi
69.1 OUT! TIMBER! Ish Sodhi is doing things here for New Zealand. The great Shane Warne would have termed this delivery as a natural variation - i.e. the leg spinner that doesn't turn. Sodhi has his fourth. He gives this one a good flight and lands it full around off. Salman gets on the front foot, trying to play with the expected spin but this one doesn't turn and goes straight on through the tiny gap between his bat and pad. The stumps are shattered and Pakistan are in a spot of bother. They are effectively 31 for 6. 205/6

90.2 OUT! LBW! This one looks plumb. Mohammad Wasim looks at his partner and then takes the DRS. Googly from Sodhi has troubled Wasim the most during his stay and it has eventually hunted him down. Landing around off, on the shorter side and turning into the batter. Wasim goes deep inside the crease to cut but it first hits him on the flap of the back pad. They appeal and the umpire agrees. DRS time. Ball Tracking finds that the impact is with the umpire's call and it's hitting the stumps. The 71-run stand has been broken and Pakistan lead by 103 runs. 277/8

1 OUT! TIMBER! Smart bowling from Abrar Ahmed. He senses the charge and delivers a googly around leg. It's on the slower side and turns away a hint along with staying low. Michael Bracewell gives a premeditated charge, then gets into two minds. He tries to keep it away at the last moment but it's too late. The stumps are disturbed and New Zealand's idea to open with Bracewell flops. Will they still go after the target? 4/1
