Brydon Carse bowls a fuller delivery, with that wobbled seam position, shapes it away from the batter on off. It lands it just does enough to nip away from Tom Latham. He gets on the front foot and closes the bat face early as he looks to flick it across the line. Hence, a healthy outside edge is found. 2 OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Couldn't be a more perfect start for the Englishmen! Gus Atkinson strikes in his very first over to get his first wicket. A big one, indeed! Gus Atkinson stays around the wickets and bowls a fuller one which tails back into the batter. It comes in from outside off, Devon Conway is drawn forward and goes for a front foot push down the ground. Fails to read the inswing and commits on the shot a bit early. He tumbles over with the momentum but maintains the ball in his hand. Sharp reflexes on display here from the pacer. Devon Conway departs on 2 and New Zealand are 4/1. 4/1

c Zak Crawley b Gus Atkinson
60.2 OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Would you believe it? A century, not to be for Kane Williamson this time around as he falls just short of his 33rd Test ton. Atkinson bowls it on a short of a good length, just outside off. It lands and takes off from the surface with that extra bit of bounce. Kane Williamson uses the depth of the crease, leans back, and tries to execute the square cut off the back foot with an angled bat. But the ball gets a bit heavy on the right-hander as he goes through the shot. It goes flat off the higher part of the bat and straight towards Zak Crawley stationed at backward point. Crawley bends low to his left and takes a good sharp catch. Gus Atkinson comes into the attack and creates impact straightaway, gets his second wicket. 227/5

He is through in his shot a bit early and hence, a thick healthy top-edge is found. The ball swirls up in the air and travels towards the deep third fielder and picks the lone fielder in the deep. Harry Brook patrolling the deep fine boundary makes no mistake as he runs a couple of steps forward and pouches is safely. Daryl Mitchell departs on 19 and New Zealand are 199/4. 199/4

Quicker and flatter from Shoaib, drifting in with the air, and turning in on the pads, Nathan Smith rocks back and goes for the flick but closes the bat face a bit too early and just chips it to short leg. Joe Root is well placed at short leg and he takes a sharp catch. Joe Root makes no mistake and pouches this safely. Nathan Smith, on debut, departs on 3 (13). England now slip further down to 199/3 to 252/7. 252/7

c Ben Duckett b Shoaib Bashir
78.5 OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Those tight lines and lengths to Henry have led to this rash stroke from the tailender. Tossed up and pushed through by Bashir, turning in around leg, Matt Henry shimmies down the track and looks to take on Ben Duckett at the fence. Henry miscues it off the cue end and it goes only as far as towards long on. Ben Duckett patrolling that boundary doesn't make any mistake and pouches this safely. A crucial cameo by Matt Henry ends as he departs on 18 (32). Bashir breaks another brewing partnership of 46 runs. New Zealand are 298/8. 298/8

Southee does go through the shot but mistimes it in the air. It goes only as far as deep mid-wicket where Gus Atkinson walks a couple of yards forward and takes a simple catch. Tim Southee departs on 15 (25) and New Zealand are 325/9 now. 325/9

3.5 OUT! LBW! A huge appeal for LBW from New Zealand in unison and up goes the finger! Crawley walks towards Duckett and after a discussion, he walks back to the pavilion without reviewing it. Something was brewing up as Crawley just couldn't find the connection off the bat. Matt Henry strikes early and gets that breakthrough for his side. Matt Henry charges in from over the wickets and bowls with a wobbled seam position. Lands it full and angles into the batter off the deck as it jags back in a touch. Zak Crawley is trapped in front in search of room and plays over the wrong line and the ball zips past the inside edge to rap him on the front pad. Ball Tracking comes up later and shows that it could have been the umpire's call as the ball clipped the leg stump. England lose their first wicket and are 9/1, trailing by 339. 9/1

Ben Duckett | 46 | 62 | 6 | 0 | 74.19 |
c Devon Conway b William O'Rourke
21.2 OUT! TAKEN! William O'Rourke strikes now. New Zealand are right on top of the proceedings here. The short ball does the trick and the 26-run partnership is broken! O'Rourke bangs in short, and keeps the line of attack on off, Ben Duckett looks to pull it aerially but mistimes it big time. He ends up getting a top edge. The ball lobs in the air towards deep square leg where Devon Conway runs forward and takes a comfortable catch. England lose their fourth wicket and further slip down to 71/4. Ben Duckett departs on 46 (62). 71/4

Jacob Bethell | 10 | 34 | 2 | 0 | 29.41 |
c Tom Blundell b Nathan Smith
14.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Nathan Smith strikes and registers his first Test wicket! A peach of a delivery from the right-arm seamer. Nathan Smith bowls it from around the wickets, on a good length. Lands it just on the off-stump line, and nips away a hint from the batter. Jacob Bethell gets on the back foot and anticipates the ball to jag back into him and ends up playing the wrong line. Goes through the shot inside the line and the ball takes a faint outside edge before carrying through to the keeper. England are 43/2 down now, just at the brink of Lunch. 43/2

Joe Root | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Nathan Smith
14.3 OUT! DRAGGED ON! Joe Root cannot believe his luck as he couldn't stay for long! But what a dream debut for Nathan Smith as he picks up two important wickets in the very first over of his Test career. Nathan Smith uses the width of the crease and bowls it with a wide angle and hurls it on a good length, around off. It is that nip-backer that comes into the batter sharply off the deck with a bit of bounce on it. Joe Root gets a bit across off to negotiate the bounce and ends up chopping it onto the back thigh pad and then on the stumps. A duck for Joe Root in his 150th Test match and England are reduced to 45/3 now, trailing by 303 more runs. And that will be LUNCH ON DAY 2! 45/3

Brook gets applause in unison from the Hagley crowd as he walks back to the dressing room, putting his team in a commanding position. Coming to the delivery, Matt Henry fires it in, on a fractionally fuller length, just outside off, and nips away a touch. Harry Brook hangs back and attempts to dab it away with an angled bat but a healthy outside edge is found. Tom Blundell makes no mistake this time and takes a regulation grab behind the wickets. Harry Brook acknowledges the crowd and departs on 171 (197). England are 381/6, leading by 33 runs. 381/6

c Glenn Phillips b Tim Southee
52.2 OUT! FLAT IN THE AIR...TAKEN! OH, MY WORD! Is that a bird? No, it's Glenn Phillips at gully! GP, you beauty! If you stand at a position like gully, you know how quickly the ball comes and Phillips is tailor-made for such catches, but he has pulled off something really extraordinary here. He is pumped and so are the Kiwis. Just what New Zealand needed. Tim Southee bowls it outside off, and bangs it on the surface on a good length, it skids through and comes off quickly onto the bat. Ollie Pope is hurried into the shot and slashes it with an angled bat but fails to keep it down and ends up hitting it flat towards the right of the gully fielder. Glenn Phillips shows remarkable reflexes as he dives in the air and stretches his right hand out and just plucks it out of thin air. Takes an absolute stunner of a one-handed catch and also maintains the ball in his hand while tumbling over. Ollie Pope is standing stunned in his crease and England lose half of their side now on 222. Glenn Phillips redeems himself from the catch he dropped off Brook earlier in the day. Southee breaks the 151-run stand between Pope and Brook. 222/5

Ben Stokes C | 80 | 146 | 9 | 0 | 54.79 |
c Tim Southee b Matt Henry
100.2 OUT! TAKEN! Finally, Matt Henry gets the better of Ben Stokes! Touch short, on off, Ben Stokes hangs back and looks to loft it with a big heave, but doesn't get the timing right as the ball gets a bit heavy on the left-hander. Hence, he gets the elevation but not the distance right. The ball swirls up in the air and carries towards long on. Tim Southee moves forward and takes a comfortable catch. Ben Stokes departs on 80 (146) and England are 485/9 now, leading by 137 runs. 485/9

Tim Southee comes from over the stumps and hurls it on a fuller length, gets a bit of shape away from the right-hander. Chris Woakes takes half-stride out and pushes hard at it but plays inside the line of the ball. Hence, a healthy outside edge is found which goes flat and low towards the second slip. The ball dips on Tom Latham but he does extremely well to gobble it up. The TV umpire has been asked to check for a fair catch, and Latham has just managed to cling onto it by keeping his fingers underneath. England are now 382/7, leading by 34 runs. 382/7

Nathan Smith changes the angle and comes from that around-the-wicket-angle. Bowls a short one again, on the leg stump line. Gus Atkinson moves outside leg and pulls it aerially. He does not get his bat under it properly and hence, it goes only as far as the deep backward square leg region. Two men in the deep lurk around to catch but Glenn Phillips calls for his catch and locks his eyes on the ball. Grabs it safely and maintains the ball in his hand while tumbling over. England are 8 down now, leading by 97 runs. Gus Atkinson departs on a quickfire 48 (36). 445/8

It hangs up in the mid-wicket region for quite a bit. Tim Southee backtracks it and holds onto it and takes a sensational sliding catch. England finish at 499, with a lead of 151 runs. 499/10

35.4 OUT! LBW! Kane Williamson has opted for a review. It looks plumb though! On a length and on middle, Kane Williamson looks to block it but misses but plays over the line and gets a blow on his pads. A loud appeal and the finger goes up. Kane Williamson cannot believe and gives it a thought before eventually referring to it. Fair delivery to begin with and UltraEdge shows no spike. Ball Tracking shows that it was clipping the bails and the onfield decision stands with the impact on the umpire's call. New Zealand retains the review though but they have lost their best batter now as Kane Williamson departs. New Zealand are 133/4. Massive moment for England! 133/4

7.1 OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! New Zealand get their second wicket. William O'Rourke starts from around the stumps and follows the batter as Duckett shuffles outside leg to execute the rap shot. O'Rourke bangs it hard into the surface and directs it towards the batter. Ben Duckett is cramped up for room but still goes through the ramp shot. He plays it way too closer to the body and hence, doesn't quite get the requisite power to go beyond the ropes. It flies off the bat and sails right down the throat of Matt Henry at deep third. An entertaining knock from Duckett comes to an end and William O'Rourke strikes in his first ball. 55/2
