Inn Break
Right then, that is all we have from this game. Don't go anywhere as a very important game is coming up. Bangladesh will square up against Oman in a do-or-die match. That one starts at 6 pm local time (2.00 pm GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye.
The winning captain, Kyle Coetzer says, that they batted first after thinking about how Papua New Guinea play. Adds that getting the win was most important. Says that they lost wickets and Papua New Guinea showed a good fight until the end.
The losing captain, Assad Vala says, that the tail-enders love to hit the ball and Vanua likes to hit the ball as well. Mentions that they want to play more games and maybe they can get more exposure then. Tells that they gave away too many runs and praises Scotland for their bowling. Adds that they could have chased 160 but they crumbled under pressure early on.
Richie Berrington has been adjudged the MAN OF THE MATCH. Berrington says that they took a bit of time to settle in and it was really important to get the partnership. Says that they were trying to get used to the wicket and were looking to bat through and then go big in the end. Adds that they can play funky shots and hit lusty blows at any time.
... PRESENTATION CEREMONY ...
Earlier in the day, Kyle Coetzer elected to bat first and it proved to be the right decision as Scotland put on a sizeable total of 165 runs on the board. Early wickets during Papua New Guinea batting meant that they were left with too much to do in the latter half of their innings. In the end, Scotland used their experience to get over the line. Let's now head over to the presentation ceremony...
'Fortune favors the brave.' This statement is apt for describing this Scotland team as they rode their luck against Bangladesh and came out on top in the previous match and in this match as well, they did require a bit of luck to get over the line. It was a commanding display of pace bowling in the Powerplay as the three pacers, Wheal, Davey and Evans all got onto the wickets column. It looked to be an easy win after that but the bowlers fumbled a lot in the latter half of the innings. Josh Davey then came back on and picked up Vanua which proved to be the difference in the end, as he ended up with four wickets and was the pick of the bowlers. Scotland will be happy to win this match and have all but secured their place in the next stage of the tournament.
Losing half your side in the first six overs is never good and that is exactly what happened to Papua New Guinea today. Out of the first five wickets to fall, only the skipper Assad Vala made it into double figures. Sese Bau and Norman Vanua however, were not yet ready to give up the fight as they put on a steady partnership. Bau fell while looking to up the ante and it was all but over. Vanua led the charge as he scored 47 runs and almost pulled the rabbit out of the hat but just fell short. Kiplin Doriga gave him ample support and even Chad Soper hit some lusty blows in the end. But, the failure of the top order meant that it was just too much to do for the lower order batters and Papua New Guinea ended up falling short by 17 runs.
What a riveting contest we have just witnessed! Two wins from two matches for Scotland as they inch closer and closer in securing a spot in the Super 12 stage. As for Papua New Guinea, it's all but over but they have given all cricketing fans something to remember them by.
