South Africa beat India by 76 runs
Into the new week, we go - Well, folks, that's all we have from Super Sunday, but the action in the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup continues. On Monday, 23 February, the remaining two teams in Group 1 will go up against each other. It will be West Indies taking on Zimbabwe at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. That game will begin at 1.30 pm GMT, but as usual, you can join the build-up a lot sooner. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Enjoy this win and then park it - The skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram feels it was a different kind of wicket than they had previously. He applauds the way his boys adapted to the conditions and feels that the partnership between Dewald Brevis and David Miller steadied the ship. Reckons the wicket was spongy, so had to run hard in the second half of the innings. Admits that there wasn't the connectedness towards the game against the UAE, but feels they were all regrouped and connected for today's game, which made the difference. On Lungi Ngidi's performance, Aiden says he is a threat and can pick wickets in any conditions. He is a soldier and delivers for the team. Notes that the West Indies are playing really good cricket, and they are looking forward to that match.
Nothing changes after one loss - The Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav believes that his side bowled well, but South Africa batted well between overs 7 and 15 and admits they could have batted better. Feels that you cannot win the game in the Powerplay, but you can lose it and losing too many wickets early meant they could not build the partnerships they needed. He acknowledges the impact of the Arshdeep and Bumrah combination, saying everyone knows what they bring to the side. Tells that nothing changes because of one loss, and he wants his team to continue playing the brand of cricket they have been playing till now.
Let's now hear what the two captains have to say...
Player of the Match - World Test Championship-winning captain, Temba Bavuma, hands the award to David Miller for his game-changing knock of 63 runs in just 35 balls. He says they were behind the eight ball when they were 20/3 and didn't want to go in the shell, so it was nice to hit a couple of boundaries along with Dewald Brevis. Reckons that this wicket demanded to hit more straight than square. It wasn't spinning too much, so they tried to take on the spinners. Shares that India have some world-class bowlers and they just tried to match the intensity.
The hosts get a taste of their own medicine - India have been, without a doubt, the best T20 outfit in the international game over the last couple of years but they have been humbled by the Proteas, who came in with a plan and executed things perfectly. India have been vulnerable with the bat during the course of the tournament but given it is such a deep batting lineup and the bowling has been so good, that they have gotten away with it, not today, though. India got the perfect start with the ball as Jasprit Bumrah once again showed why he is the most feared bowler in the world. However, the spinners failed to make an impact and Varun Chakaravarthy had a rare shoddy outing. Bumrah and co did pull things back a bit at the death but Hardik Pandya went for 20 runs in the final over and the momentum swayed South Africa's way. With the bat, the less we speak, the better. As many as 8 top-class T20 batters and yet India only managed to get 111 runs. Once again, the opening stand didn't work out and this time, it was Ishan Kishan who got out for a duck. Abhishek Sharma huffed and puffed his way to 15 runs and Suryakumar Yadav also got a start but barring Shivam Dube, no one made any sort of an impact and things went out of reach too soon.
Proteas take revenge and then some - South Africa will have that evening in Barbados from a couple of years ago in the back of their mind heading into this clash. And boy, they have completely flipped the script on its head and have dealt a big blow to the host nation, India, who are dubbed as the favorites to win the competition. They stuttered with the bat early on, losing 3 wickets for just 20 runs but then came their crisis-man, David Miller and along with Dewald Brevis, shifted the momentum of the first innings. Their stand, worth 97 runs, was the highlight of the Proteas batting innings. Tristan Stubbs' late burst in the final over took them to a solid total of 187 runs. With the ball, South Africa returned fire and had India in all sorts of bother inside the Powerplay. Aiden Markram's decision to open the bowling against the two left-handed openers worked like a charm as he got rid of an in-form Ishan Kishan. The pacers then followed up and kept pressing. The catching was fantastic, and the changes in pace and in lengths were just spot-on from the Proteas. Marco Jansen was the standout with his four-fer as the likes of Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch picked up five wickets between them.
A double bashing of the hosts - Sri Lanka earlier in the day and India now, the first Super Sunday of the Super Eight stage has seen the two co-hosts being handed hefty defeats, and in the process, both of them have been derailed off the tracks right now. The Proteas, on the other hand, have made Ahmedabad a second home and have outplayed the reigning champions, handing them a first defeat in Men's T20 World Cup matches after 12 straight wins.

Marco Jansen To Jasprit Bumrah OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! A thumping win for South Africa by 76 runs. Pace taken off, full and pushed across the right-hander, Bumrah extends his hands into the lofted drive. Gets it right off the toe end of the blade, and it is spooned to extra cover, where Aiden Markram circles under it on the edge of the ring and makes no mistake. Two in two for Jansen to complete a statement win for the Proteas.
Jasprit Bumrah is the last man in for India.

Lungi does not have to move an inch, and he takes a sharp catch around his waist. No celebration from Marco. He just turns around and walks back to his mark. Dube's vigil comes to an end.

Keshav Maharaj To Arshdeep Singh OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Tristan Stubbs does it again! Maharaj loops up a length delivery in line of the stumps. Arshdeep Singh powers it down to long on but does not get the desired elevation, even though there was plenty of power on the shot. Tristan Stubbs in the deep runs to his right to take the catch but since it's hit with a lot of power, the fielder has to adjust his balance. He catches the ball, lobs it over as he jumps over the fence and comes back to complete the catch.

Keshav Maharaj To Hardik Pandya OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! A wicket is always on the cards with the pressure building. Fractionally short, outside off, into the surface and turning slightly away. Hardik Pandya tries to lift it away off the back foot but fails to get enough distance. Gets it high and to long off where Tristan Stubbs holds onto it near the fence after moving to his left. He realises that the momentum will take him over the ropes. He quickly releases the ball, comes back and holds onto it.
DRINKS BREAK! India are going nowhere in the chase. The task continues to get steeper as the required rate has now climbed to 17. It has been execution of the highest order from South Africa. Aiden Markram has rotated his bowlers smartly and has not allowed the Indian batters to line up any one option. The acceleration cannot come any later for India. They have to put their foot down immediately after the break. South Africa will be confident of closing this game out from here.

SIX! A biggie off the last ball turns it into a productive over for India. 11 runs off it. Maharaj errs in both line and length. This is short and down leg. Sundar walks inside the line and gets low to find the elevation. Swivels and shovels it over backward square leg.

Keshav Maharaj To Suryakumar Yadav
On a nagging length, around off, Suryakumar gets down on a knee and plays the sweep to deep backward square leg. Kagiso Rabada reads the spin on the ball and tidies up. They cross.
DRINKS BREAK! Two ordinary Powerplays with the bat from the two batting sides. South Africa managed 41/3 but India are 10 runs worse at 31/3 at the same stage. The game did change in the middle phase and India will be hoping that the ball slides on a bit better now. The Proteas have been very smart with their off-pace deliveries and will look to use those variations throughout the innings. With that said, Keshav Maharaj comes on to bowl right after the fielding restrictions are lifted.

Marco Jansen To Abhishek Sharma OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Two fielders bump into each other, but Corbin Bosch holds onto it. A massive wicket for South Africa. This is the knuckleball from Jansen, full and on middle. Abhishek does not pick the variation. He clears the front leg and has a swipe across the line. Skies it off the toe end of the blade over wide mid on. Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj go after it from mid-wicket and mid on, respectively, and there is no communication between the two men. Maharaj just about withdraws himself but cannot avoid colliding with Bosch. Corbin stretches his hands out in front and the ball hits him near the wrist but he holds onto it near his chest. Keshav falls on the back of Bosch but the latter is not put off by that and he grabs hold of the ball.
Has that been taken? My word, that could have ended up being a nasty collision between Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch but the latter seems to have taken a stunning catch. It is quickly confirmed to be a fair catch and that's the end of Abhishek Sharma.

Marco Jansen To Tilak Varma OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND GONE! South Africa celebrates as Varma nicks one behind, but he is not sure. Varma takes it upstairs. There was a sound as the ball passed the blade. UltraEdge loads and shows a big spike. Not sure why Tilak Varma reviewed that one. Marco Jansen steams in and serves it into the surface, touch fuller and gets it to bounce off the deck, outside off. Tilak Varma charges down the track and tries to push away from his body and edges it to the keeper. Quinton de Kock pouches it safely.
It will be Marco Jansen with his left-arm medium pacers, to bowl from the other end.

Aiden Markram To Ishan Kishan OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! It's Kishan who departs on a duck this time! Indian openers are yet to give a breakthrough opening stand this tournament. Nicely tossed up, around off, turning slightly away. Kishan gets on his knee to slog but gets a top edge. Pretty high in the air but not far away. Ryan Rickelton, inside the ring, tracks back at cover and holds onto the skier.
Dew on the ground? Robin Uthappa on air certainly feels so.
