Not much to write home about Bangladesh and their performance on the field in that final session as they couldn't pick up a single wicket and just succumbed to pressure. Hasan Mahmud had set things up in the first session and then Nahid Rana showed glimpses of greatness in the second session but the two spinners, Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan lacked control and couldn't get the job done in the final session with the pacers tiring out.
Generally, Day 1 is the best day for batting at the Chepauk and after aiding the seamers for the first two sessions, the pitch did flatten out and with the sun coming out as well, there was nothing in it for the bowlers. Still, India were in a precarious position but the duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who have both played a lot at this ground, stitched together a monumental stand with Ashwin finishing the day with a 6th Test ton on his home ground, just a couple of days after his 38th birthday. Jadeja also ended the day on an unbeaten 86 and will look to bring up the three-figure mark as well.
SESSION SUMMARY - 32 overs, 163 runs and 0 wickets! What an end to the first day of play here in Chennai and at the end of it all, hosts India seem to be in complete command which seemed highly unlikely towards the end of the second session. Bangladesh will be deflated after having been ahead in the game for the bulk of Day 1 and will now have to regroup and come back strongly on Day 2.

Right then, another session has flown by and it has ebbed and flowed back and forth with this match moving at a brisk pace. Coming into the final session, India will aim to go unblemished while Bangladesh will try to restrict India below a challenging total, and look to snag quick wickets as they come out to bowl. Bangladesh's efforts were immediately rewarded when Hasan Mahmud struck with the prized scalp of Rishabh Pant, providing an early breakthrough. Nahid Rana complemented Mahmud's efforts well, maintaining both his pace and consistency throughout his spells. The seamers continued to find assistance from the conditions, prompting the Bangladesh think tank to stick with their pace-heavy strategy. They rotated their trio of fast bowlers between Hasan Mahmud, Rana, and Taskin Ahmed - although Taskin struggled at times to find his optimal length. Mehidy Hasan operated from the other end and eventually added his name to the wicket-takers list.
India's innings took an early hit when Rishabh Pant fell victim to a sharp delivery, abruptly ending a promising 62-run partnership and setting a sombre tone for the session. Jaiswal's confidence visibly grew as the session progressed, culminating in a well-deserved half-century. And the arrival of KL Rahul brought much-needed calm to the Indian innings. Partnering with the young and impressive Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul helped steer the ship through choppy waters momentarily with a 48-run stand. However, the tide turned once again as both set batters departed in quick succession. With the scoreboard not yet showing a commanding total, the team found itself facing the challenging task of rebuilding. With two new batters at the crease and the ball doing a bit of mischief for the pacers, Jadeja and Ashwin navigated cautiously. Ashwin played some fantastic strokes and kept the scorecard ticking to see India through the session with a brisk partnership.
TEA, DAY 1 - SESSION SUMMARY - 25 overs, 88 runs, 3 wickets. Bangladesh would be very pleased with their bowling efforts going to the dressing room as they have managed to clean up the Indian middle order in this session, quite effectively. Conditions remained pretty much overcast with the sun struggling to pop out of the clouds. And as it is generally said that the second session is the best time to bat on, it certainly wasn't the case this time around. With the residual moisture still present, it helped the pacers to extract some assistance.

Not an ideal pitch to start on Day 1 in a Test match in India and the hosts were taken aback by the movement in the air and off the deck as well. All three wickets that fell were nicks and certainly, a couple of them could have been avoided. Rohit Sharma did get a beauty but he did struggle against Hasan Mahmud in general. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill though should have applied themselves better. Yashasvi Jaiswal looked solid from the get-go and with the help of Rishabh Pant, led the fightback for the hosts with an unbeaten stand of 54 runs.
An uncanny day in Chennai where generally conditions are hot and humid but it was overcast and there was some proper bounce given it is a red soil pitch. The Bangladeshi pacers backed their skipper's decision to bowl first as Hasan Mahmud ripped through the Indian top order picking up 3 huge wickets. Taskin Ahmed was a bit on the shorter side and so was Nahid Rana which they will be looking to correct in the next session.
A session that seemed to be heading a hundred percent toward Bangladesh but in the second hour or so, India have looked much better with the bat, and the two left-handers seem to have regained a bit more control. Bangladesh though will still be very pleased and will look for a couple of more wickets right after the break in order to get back on top.

India kick start their home season by welcoming Bangladesh for a couple of Test matches and three T20Is and the two Asian giants will go toe-to-toe in a battle for sub-continental supremacy starting with a Test match at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Bangladesh's rise at the international level has been a meteoric one but they have always fallen short of churning consistent results against big teams, especially away from home but a demolition job of Pakistan in Pakistan just a few weeks ago will certainly boost their confidence coming into the Lion's den to take on a top side like India. Talking about India, this is their first Test series since March when they played at home against England and the two-time WTC finalists will be itching to bolster their chances of making it three WTC finals in a row with a series win here. India do also have a full-strength side at their disposal with the coach having a selection headache for sure. Anyhow, a few players are a certainty as the stalwarts of Indian batting and Indian cricket in general, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to play red-ball cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill might also be a certainty but it is that middle order where India have a few decisions to make with Rishabh Pant almost guaranteed to be back in the Playing XI, leaving the likes of KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan in the unknown. Jasprit Bumrah is another certainty but whether he is the lone pacer or if not just him then who starts alongside him? Do India go with the experience of Mohammed Siraj or the form of Akash Deep or even hand a debut to Yash Dayal? Only time will tell. The duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be crucial as always and Axar Patel will add that extra protective layer with both bat and ball. Moving on to Bangladesh, and they couldn't have asked for this difficult series to come at a better time, just when they have beaten Pakistan 2-0 at their home in fine fashion. It was really the first Test match where they showed real heart and even after Pakistan declared on 448 in the first innings, Bangladesh not only went on to irk out almost a 100-run lead but came back and bundled out the hosts so quickly, that they were able to win the Test match even though the whole of Day 1 was washed out. The 2nd Test was a low-scoring one but yet again, Bangladesh showed great maturity while chasing in the fourth innings and sealed a monumental series win. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto will know that this is going to be a different sort of challenge, one his spinners might enjoy but the batters will have to apply themselves really well as we have seen some great teams go down in a hurry to this Indian bowling unit at home. The veteran duo of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan will be key but they also have some rising superstars. Mehidy Hasan is one such name who had a fine series against Pakistan and has had a couple of memorable performances against India as well in the white-ball format. Another name is that of Nahid Rana who is dubbed as Bangladesh's first-ever 150kph bowler and he sure has pace and it will be a test of his talent playing against the top side in the form of India. All in all, Bangladesh do have the players to match their counterparts but as we have seen so many times in the past, it is the application and the consistency that separates the top sides from the rest and one can bank on that consistency from the Indians.
