Kevin Pietersen: Birth of a young star

Sydney:

Kevin Pietersen was one of the stars at the ICC Awards after being adjudged the One Day Player of the Year and the Emerging Player of the Year. The man with a unique batting style and an even more unique hairstyle has achieved massive popularity in his 11-month-old career. So much so that he, along with Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff, has been put on stamps in England. The only other living people to have that honour are the royal family. The 25-year-old, selected to make his Test debut during the Ashes ahead of Graham Thorpe, was quite sensational with his batting.Cut-off periodHowever, four of the five Ashes Test are not being taken into consideration for the awards because they are out of the cut off period, otherwise KP may have earned a nomination for Test Player of the Year as well. His one-day record explains why he picked up awards in both categories that he was nominated. Since November 2004, he has played 21 one-dayers at an average of almost 90 with three hundreds and four half centuries to his name.He has played five Tests till now, but only one Test came during the voting period for the ICC Awards, which ended on July 31. The average in his first Test was 121, though now it's down to 52.55.Pietersen already has a Test hundred to his name from the Oval Ashes Test, but what he's really earned a reputation for are his sixes in one-dayers.Next Viv Richards? And his fondness for despatching balls outside off stump through the leg side has people betting on him being the next Viv Richards.Already he has the fastest 100 by an English player- a 69-ball effort against South Africa in a losing cause. But it is his 91 off 65 balls against Australia that's been described by his captain as one of the best. Of course the funky hairstyle just complements his persona.
