Thunderous celebrations erupted to welcome the U-19 World Cup winning Indian team which landed here on Tuesday after a successful campaign in Australia.

The team under skipper Unmukt Chand beat hosts Australia in the final on Sunday to lift the coveted trophy for the third time, an achievement much appreciated by fans gathered outside the airport to greet the young stalwarts. Chand, who slammed a match-winning unbeaten century in the summit clash, was the first to come out of the Shivaji Chhatrapati International airport terminal, holding aloft the trophy.

Nasik Dhol and bhangra music had been arranged and the players seemed to soak in all of it with delight. They also showed the trophy to the fans.

Wishes have been pouring in from Sunday for the team with former cricketers, national players (read) as well as Bollywood celebrities and the Prime Ministers Office congratulating the entire contingent for a stellar showing Down Under (See).

Many have hailed the achievement as even bigger as beating Australia in their home conditions is never easy.

A grand reception has been planned at a hotell towards the evening. The Board of Control for Cricket in India will felicitate the team. (With PTI inputs)
