Agarkar says that there is no timeline yet on Virat Kohli's injury recovery. While they expect him to be fit for the England series, there is still no complete clarity on the matter. 

"He deserves it, especially with the bat, you need to be good enough as a player too, he was always close to making it to the team," says Agarkar, while justifying the decision to include Shreyas Iyer and also elect him as the captain of the T20I side.

The India A squad for two multi-day games in Sri Lanka has also been announced. Dhruv Jurel is the captain of that side, with Devdutt Padikkal as the vice-captain.

Tilak Varma has been appointed as India's new vice-captain in T20Is. He will serve as deputy to Shreyas Iyer in the Ireland and England series, as well as the Asian Games 2026. A totally new leadership group for Team India in the shortest format.

An update for the ODI squad too! Yashasvi Jaiswal has replaced Virat Kohli for the Afghanistan ODIs, confirms Agarkar. Kohli suffered an injury during the IPL 2026 final between RCB and GT. Rohit Sharma's fitness is also under the scanner, and he is expected to be at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru in the upcoming days. Hardik is in Bengaluru as well.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia reveals that the squad for the three-match ODI series in England, which follows the five-match T20I series, will be announced during the latter stages of the Afghanistan ODI series.

Ajit Agarkar on including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: "His performances have forced us to pick him. I know his age and all, but two IPLs in row is a big deal. Besides, he was good in U19 too, we are hopeful that he will show the same ability when playing for the country."

Ajit Agarkar on leaving out Hardik Pandya from T20I squads: "ODI is the objective with him, gives us a chance to go with Nitish Reddy, there will be rotation and rest, we will see if he will be ready for the ODI World Cup, we will assess and go ahead."

Ajit Agarkar puts the decision to make Shreyas Iyer captain and drop Suryakumar Yadav as "partly our plans, partly SKY's poor form". Agarkar says that Shreyas was in the BCCI's plans, and Suryakumar's poor form did not help his chances. 

Agarkar also admits that he had a difficult conversation with SKY over his dropping, but did not reveal further details. He says it was in the best interests of the team.

Apart from Suryakumar Yadav, there are a number of notable omissions from the T20I squad. Hardik Pandya has been left out (likely rested), while Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav have also got the axe. Jasprit Bumrah does not feature in the squad for the Ireland and England T20Is, but he will play the Asian Games.

HERE WE GO! Shreyas Iyer is confirmed as India's new T20I captain. He will lead India in the Ireland and England T20I series, as well as in the Asian Games 2026. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also been included in all three squads. Suryakumar Yadav has been totally left out.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (36) and Krunal Pandya (35) played pivotal roles in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2026 triumph, but both have been out of the India picture for a few years now. It will be interesting to see whether either of the two get a look in, maybe for the Asian Games!

While Suryakumar Yadav is set to be replaced as captain, it appears unlikely that Axar Patel will remain as vice-captain either, given his poor season at the helm of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026. Instead, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have emerged as the likely vice-captaincy candidates.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann has joked that he does not want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be selected for the England T20I tour, as he is afraid that the bowlers would be hit to all parts of the ground by the 15-year-old. "I hope Sooryavanshi doesn't get picked. He would hit our bowlers everywhere," said Swann.

A number of uncapped players impressed during IPL 2026, and could be in contention to make either the squad for the Ireland and England series, or the squad for the Asian Games. Pacers like Rasikh Dar, Kartik Tyagi and Sakib Hussain impressed massively in the IPL.

Among batters, players like Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh could have an outside chance.

Shubman Gill was dropped from India's T20I squad right before the T20 World Cup 2026. After an excellent IPL 2026, where he smashed more than 700 runs, it will be intriguing to see if Gill gets his spot back in the T20I setup. Remember, he will already be occupied with ODI and Test assignments, as he is India captain in both formats.

According to reports, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is likely to be included in the India squad for all three of their upcoming T20I assignments - Ireland, England and the Asian Games! Huge news for the 15-year-old, who will surely make his international debut soon then.

The Asian Games squad is likely to be slightly different to the T20I squad for the Ireland and England series, as the Asian Games concludes just a few days before the start of the T20I series against West Indies. While the Asian Games concludes on October 3, the West Indies series begins on October 6.

Last time around, Ruturaj Gaikwad had led India in the Asian Games, with many uncapped IPL stars also being picked. Will we see something similar this time?

The BCCI have now confirmed that the selection meeting is underway. According to a report by Indian Express, Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to be the new T20I captain, has joined the meeting online.

It will be interesting to see what combination Ajit Agarkar and co. select for the T20I series in Ireland and England. With conditions expected to be seam-friendly, we may see less spinners feature. In that case, one of Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav or Varun Chakravarthy may get dropped from the T20I squad. All four have been India regulars in the shortest format of late.

Additionally, we may get to see an extra fast bowler or two be selected!

If Suryakumar Yadav is indeed axed from not just captaincy but also the T20I squad, it raises the question of fairness. Suryakumar's form with the bat was nothing to write home about even when India lifted the T20 World Cup 2026. His case was made worse by a sub-standard IPL 2026 season. However, it must also be remembered that he has not lost a single series as India's T20I captain, and appears to share an excellent rapport with head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Remember, the ODI squad for the three-match series against England will not be announced today. Only the T20I squads will be named. As a result, there will be no clarity over the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's ODI future today.

In total, the BCCI will announce four different Team India squads today, at the press conference, which is scheduled from 1 PM IST. These are the four squads that will be named:

a) India's two-match T20I series vs Ireland
b) India's five-match T20I series vs England
c) India's T20 squad for Asian Games 2026
d) India A's two multi-day matches in Sri Lanka

If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi does get picked, it will be interesting to see which squads he is exactly named in. India play two T20Is in Ireland and five T20Is in England, but will the 15-year-old wonderkid be picked for both squads?

The meeting is underway at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, NDTV has learnt. We still have just over an hour till the press conference for the squad announcement begins. 

The Team India chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has arrived at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. All eyes on him, with some big changes expected. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha, who is also part of the selection committee, has arrived as well. 

As per multiple reports, Shreyas Iyer is not only going to return to the India T20I squad, but also take over as captain immediately, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. In recent years, Shreyas has been one of the most impressive captains in the IPL, reaching two consecutive finals in 2024 and 2025, and winning one. It would still be a bold call, given the success of Suryakumar as India skipper, but it looks like the latter's poor form may cost him.

While the immediate focus is on the Ireland and England T20Is, the selectors will also announce the team that will take part in the Asian Games 2026, which goes on from September 17 to October 3. It will be interesting to see whether the same team is announced, or two different ones.

Sooryavanshi's age is 15 years, 71 days (as of today). If he is picked for the Ireland and England T20I series, he will be the youngest ever player to be picked for the senior men's India squad. Overall, Sachin Tendulkar (16 years, 205 days - vs Pakistan, 1989) is the youngest debutant in Indian men's cricket history. If Sooryavanshi gets picked for the squad and then goes on to debut vs Ireland in 20 days' time, he will be the youngest international player in Indian cricket history.

Historically, the Ireland Tour of India has been a preparatory ground for bigger tests. In recent times, Jasprit Bumrah made his injury comeback in a series against Ireland. This time too, the BCCI is primed to take a big call in the series. The centre of attention is a 15-year-old kid - Vaibhav Sooryavanshi  

The biggest change of them all will be the skipper's role. Suryakumar Yadav, who not long ago became the third Indian captain to lift the T20 World Cup trophy after the great MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. But rather long lean patch followed by inconsistent returns from the 2026 T20 World Cup and the IPL has seen Suryakumar Yadav's stocks fall rapidly. 

In recent times, rarely has any squad announcement been so closely followed like it will be today. The contours of Indian T20I cricket will change today. A new captain will most likely be named, a 15-year-old might get his senior debut, while doubts remain over whether a T20 World Cup-winning skipper will be part of the side or not.
