Hilditch trains guns on senior players

Melbourne:

Australia's chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch has blamed senior players Brett Lee, Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden for the cricket team's poor performance in the Test series against India and South Africa.

"The reality is that the senior players in the side are what's going to make this rebuilding process successful," said Hilditch.

"And the reality is in the Test series against South Africa and India, we didn't get great input from two or three of our senior players."

Hilditch, who along with the other selectors came in for severe criticism for the series defeats in India and at home to South Africa, singled out Lee, Hayden and Hussey for criticism.

"Brett Lee didn't have a good series, for all sorts of reasons, either in India or South Africa, and that's your premier strike bowler," he said.

"Obviously Matthew's had a bit of a disappointing run, and Michael Hussey, you could never predict that he wouldn't have a significant impact against South Africa. So they're the key areas which led to South Africa winning," he said on ABC radio.

Hilditch, however, refused to comment on Hayden's future until after the next Shield match at the end of the month. "We haven't made that decision as yet. We'll meet at the end of the next Shield games, which are at the beginning of February," he said.

"About two days after that we'll meet in person and pick our South African touring squad. Matthew's position in the side will be reviewed then, as will the entire squad."
