Comeback man Kartik injures himself

New Delhi:

Murali Kartik's trysts with destiny continue.

The left-arm spinner twisted his ankle on the day he earned a recall to India's Test side for the home series against South Africa.

Kartik had last played a Test in November 2004, against South Africa in Kanpur and would be out of action for three weeks after incurring the injury in a Deodhar Trophy match on Monday.

Meanwhile, the in-form Gautam Gambhir was also kept out of the 14-man side for the first two Tests against the South Africans.

Ishant Sharma, India's find of the winter, would be rested for the Chennai Test as he has not fully recovered from injuries to a finger and toe.

Wasim Jaffer, out of sorts in Australia, was retained, as was Virender Sehwag.

Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, who had fitness worries ahead of the selection meeting, were included in the side.

Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have all been retained in the side, which would be led by Anil Kumble.

Piyush Chawla, the leg spinner was on standby for Kartik and would now be drafted in as the third spinner.

Squad: Anil Kumble (captain), Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wicketkeeper), Harbhajan Singh, Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan, Rudra Pratap Singh and Piyush Chawla.

Standby: Dinesh Karthik
