The Commonwealth Games 2014 will be the largest multi-sports event to be held in Scotland. Scotland had earlier hosted the Games in 1970 and 1986 when they were held in Edinburg. In an effort to build up to the big event, Google paid tribute to the athletes by coming out with a new doodle.
The doodle is a combination of colours. It consists of a dark green background with five athletes representing different disciplines in the foreground. There is a picture of two wrestlers, two cyclists, one shot putter, a person playing badminton and a person lawn bowling.
Known as an "emporium of the world" during its heyday as a trading port, Glasgow is now braced for the arrival of 100,000 overseas sports fans and over 4,000 athletes from the 71 competing nations.
A total of 18 sports and 261 medal events will be contested at the Games. A record 22 para-sport events will be contested in five different sports (athletics, cycling, lawn bowls, swimming and weightlifting) para track cycling will be held for the very first time. Archery and tennis had to take a back seat as they were replaced with triathlon and judo. Among the new entries are the triathlon mixed relay event, more shooting medal chances for women and the addition of women's boxing.
With world class athletes representing their respective countries, the fans can expect to be treated to some brilliant performances and Google has chosen this way to look forward to an event that for the next 12 days will catch the centre of the world's attention.
