India's medal standings depend a lot on the shooting contingent. It will be a test of nerves for Indians at the Barry Buddon Shooting Range. Veteran star Gagan Narang will under pressure to hit bull's eye in the 50m rifle three-position event along with Sanjeev Rajput. Today is the last day of the shooting competition.
Narang and Rajput will be the favourites in this event, having won the gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. On the distaff side, Lajja Gauswami and Elizabeth Koshy, who returned empty handed on Monday from the 50m rifle prone event, have a good chance to win a medal in 50m rifle three position. (Also read: Narang pleased after winning silver)
Narang did well to clinch silver in a new event -- 50m rifle prone - on Monday. But Narang's biggest challenge will be today. He is a London Olympics bronze medallist and has a lot of reputation to defend. Two more veterans are in medal fray. Mansher Singh and Manavjit Sandhu will feature in the men's trap qualifiers.
India's campaign in this Commonwealth Games has been dominated by young shooters and the weightlifters. Jitu Rai was like a breath of fresh air. The 26-year-old Rai gave ample display of his class by winning gold in the men's 50 m pistol event. This was Rai's first Commonwealth Games. Nepal-born Rai had won a gold (in 10m air pistol) and a silver (in 50m pistol) in the World Cup last month.
Much of India's fortunes depend on the wrestlers. London Olympics medallist Sushil Kumar (74 kg), Amit Kumar (57 kg), Rajiv Tomar (125 kg) and Jyoti (women's freestyle 75 kg) will begin their campaign today. Wrestling events will spread over the next three days.
The first big test for Sardar Singh's hockey team comes up today. India play favourites Australia. The Indians are unbeaten at the group stage but the Australians will surely test the defence that has looked suspect at times.
India's badminton campaign in the team events have been quite tardy. The Indians have never been great team players. The Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponappa combination is slowly losing its shine and time has come to look at new pairs. The individual events start today. Gurusaidutt and K Srikanth will be in action.
