Vinesh Phogat was a revelation on Tuesday. The 19-year-old sister of Olympian Geeta Phogat won the 48kg wrestling gold in her maiden Commonwealth Games. Vinesh edged out England's Yana Rattigan in a tough final bout. This should inspire Lalita (53 kg), Sakshi Malik (58 kg) and Navjot Kaur (69 kg). All have a chance to enter the medal rounds.
Bajrang Kumar (61 kg) and Satyawant Kardian (97 kg) will not be short on inspiration too. India's men, led by double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, set the Clyde Auditorium on fire on Tuesday with their golden show, India's best so far in the Games.
At least five Indian boxers are a win away from entering the medal rounds. Prominent among them are Vijender Singh (75 kg) and Devendro Singh (49 kg). Pinki Jhangra (flyweight) will be the lone women in the ring today. Amritpreet Singh (heavyweight) will be the first boxer on show in a quarterfinal clash against a local man. A win should set up the mood for rest of the evening.
India's hopes from track and field events centre around Vikas Gowda. The burly Gowda will be in action in men's discus while Mayookha Johny and Sahana Kumari will be in action in women's long jump and high jump, respectively.
The track and field events have been dominated by the Jamaicans and Kenyans. Stephanie McPherson led an impressive Jamaican clean sweep of a high-quality women's 400m, while there were also golds for Andrew Riley in the 110m hurdles and Kimberly Williams in the triple jump.
Not to be outdone, Joyce Chepkirui led a Kenyan 1-2-3 of a slow-paced 10,000m, while Faith Kibiegon claimed gold in the women's 1500m as favoured teammate Hellen Onsando Obiri faded badly.
Australia continue to lead the medal tally with 101 medals (34 gold, 31 silver and 36 bronze). England (93), Canada (39) and Scotland (37) follow the Aussies in that order. New Zealand (31) are just ahead of India (36) by virtue of an extra gold (11 to India's 10). The Indians wrestlers could change that equation today.
