Humpy beats Hungarian GM to take fifth spot

Overcoming the defeat suffered in the previous round, Koneru Humpy outplayed Hungarian Grandmaster Zoltan Varga in the seventh round of First Saturday GM Chess tournament being held at Budapest. Humpy, who has been inconsistent in this category IX tournament, rallied with grit to trounce Varga, having an ELO rating of 2506 as against her rating of 2484, to be placed fifth with 3.5 points. The 14-year ninth standard world junior champion, who is aspiring for the third GM norm, would now take on IM Adam Horvath of Hungary in eighth round. Hungarian GM Ferenc Berkes and Yugoslaov GM Ilincic Zoltan are the joint leaders after the seventh round with five points each, while Hungarian IM Attila Czebe tasted the first defeat in this tournament aginast Argentine IM Ruben Felgear and slided to the next spot with 4.5 points. IM Tejas Bakre, the other Indian taking part in the tournament drew with top seed GM Jozsef Horvath of Hungary and is placed fourth on four points. (PTI)
