Oropesa:
Dronavalli Harika won India's lone medal in the World Youth Chess festival as she earned a silver in the girls' under-12 event as the festival drew to a close here last evening. It was left to Harika to put India on the medals table as Saheli Nath, still smarting under the shock defeat in the penultimate round, tamely surrendered to Shuyu Ding of China. The under-12 girls' leader Shen Yang needed only a draw to win the title and she achieved it quickly. This was Harika's second big feat after winning the silver last year in World u-10 championships at the same venue. The Indian prodigy is a much improved player and already a feared opponent in her age group. Overall, Georgia won the most gold medals. Of the 10 on offer, they bagged four, three of them by girls in the under-14, 16 and 18 categories. China and Hungary won two golds each while Ukraine and Russia accounted for one gold each. The Europeans would be pleased that they have broken India's domination that came about in last year's edition here. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
