China's Li Na reached the fourth round of the Australian Open Friday when Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues withdrew in tears after painfully rolling her ankle.
Li was leading 2-0 in the first set when Medina Garrigues suffered the injury during a baseline rally. Medina Garrigues lay on the court crying in anguish, but after a medical time-out she continued with the ankle heavily strapped.
However, after losing the next game on Li's serve, and then the first two points on her own serve, Medina Garrigues decided she could no longer continue.
The result puts Li through to a much-anticipated fourth round showdown with Kim Clijsters in a rematch of last year's final, won by the Belgian in three sets.
Li went on to win the French Open in 2011, becoming the first Asian player to win a grand slam singles title.
