World Cup 2018, Uruguay vs Russia Highlights: Uruguay Beat Russia To Top Group A; Egypt Lose

Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez were on target in the either half as Uruguay thrash Russia 3-0 at the Samara Arena on Monday to top Group A. A clinical Suarez free-kick and a deflected goal helped Uruguay take a 2-0 lead at half-time against Russia at the Samara Arena in Russia on Monday. The hosts showed plenty of promise in the first 10 minutes but failed to cling on it, Uruguay on the other hand looked comfortable on the ball and were awarded twice for their brilliant play. The hosts have had a scintillating start to the tournament beating Egypt and Saudi Arabia in their opening two encounters but the real test for the hosts will be when they take on the 14th ranked team in their final group stage encounter. 21:09 IST: Rodriguez takes a shot on goal from outside the box, but his shot is kept away by the keeper for a corner -- which is wasted by Caceres who had a chance to take a free header.

20:56 IST: Cavani in space, drifts past the Russian defenders, he wants to take a shot on his own, does so but the ball goes wide off target.

20:43 IST: Great share of attack shown by the Russians,  a hint of inspiration as they combine well but they have again failed to get their footing right. Russia have not beaten a South American nation since past 30 years.

20:12 IST: Uruguay looking very comfortable on the ball but Suarez comes with a lay-off and a free-kick has been given to Russia -- as they look to get back their combination right. 

20:07 IST: RED CARD! Igor Smolnikov has collected the second yellow in the 36th minute for a rash challenge. Meanwhile, Uruguay has not picked up a yellow card so far. 

20:05 IST: Clarification: The second goal which was earlier awarded to Laxlat has been changed to an own goal by Cheryshev -- for a deflection after a review.

20:00 IST: Dzyuba on the left flank for Russia does a bit too much to lose possession with ease. Uruguay have never lost a World Cup match in which they have taken a 2-0 lead. 

19:57 IST: Meanwhile from the Saudi Arabia, Egypt match -- Salah has put the Egyptian in front in the 22nd minute. 

19:52 IST: Free-kick for Uruguay from the right flank, whipped in to the near corner. Cavani tries for an acrobatic effort, but the ball has fallen on the re-bound which has been hit by Diego Laxlat, takes a deflection off Cheryshev and Uruguay take 2-0 lead in 23 minutes!    

19:49 IST: Uruguay keeping the ball well, maintaining possession. Russia on the other side, showing lack of intensity, not trying hard to win the ball. 21 minutes up!  

19:45 IST: Luis Suarez scores his 7th goal in the World Cup to become the second all-time leading scorer for his country, surpasses Diego Forlan. 

19:42 IST: Corner for Russia, Samedov on the ball comfortably collected by Muslera. 

19:37 IST: Free-kick on the edge of the box for Uruguay, for a challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur. Luis Suarez on the ball and he scores as he avoids the wall, puts it into the far corner. Uruguay take lead in the 10th minute through a free-kick.  

19:34 IST: Russia keeping possession try to play a long ball but the ball rolls off for a goalkick for Uruguay. 

19:30 IST: Kick-off! Russia gets the ball rolling and Uruguay takes an early shot off goal through Matias Vecino.

19:01 IST: Uruguay and Russia have arrived for the clash, both sides will be aiming to enter the Round of 16 with a cent percent win in the group stages.

19:00 IST: Hello and welcome the live commentary from the Group A match between Uruguay and Russia. 

A draw would also be good enough to give Russia first place, thanks to the eight goals from two matches that have made believers out of fans used to decades of World Cup futility. Both teams then face the likely prospect of going up against either Spain or Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the last 16 -- although underdogs Iran are still in the running in a tight Group B.

Uruguay however are likely to provide the type of stern test Russia will need to overcome if they are launch an extended run in the knockout rounds.

Yet the hosts are brimming with confidence having made it past the group stage of a World Cup for the first time since the Soviet Union lost to Belgium in the last 16 in 1986.

Russia had won just two of nine World Cup matches before kicking off the most watched event on the planet with a 5-0 rout of the Saudis. Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko -- the former sports minister who still oversees football in an unofficial capacity -- said the squad had no right to relax.
