India defeated two-time defending champions West Indies in the final by 43 runs at the iconic Lord's. Kapil Dev's team were bowled out for a meagre 183 runs in 54.4 overs (in a 60-over match).
Kris Srikkanth top-scored for India with 38 runs. They had no answer to the bowling quartet of Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, and Michael Holding and even the innocuous off-spin of Larry Gomes.
However, the Indian bowling unit shocked the West Indies batsmen as they bundled them out for 140 runs. Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath picked three wickets. Vivian Richards top scored for the West Indies with 33 runs.
Earlier, the West Indies beat Pakistan by eight wickets in the semi-final. On the other hand, eventual winner India defeated hosts England by six wickets. Mohinder Amarnath bagged the player of the match for his all-round effort.
Kapil Dev's unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe was the most talked about innings of the Prudential World Cup, as he rescued India from a precarious 17/5 to take them to victory.
