While Andy Murray may continue to say family pressure means nothing to him ahead of Sunday's final against Roger Federer, his family is celebrating his success and eagerly awaiting the title clash of Wimbledon. And leading the army of hopeful loved ones is Andy's granny, who was all of 2 when a Briton last won here!
For Shirley Erskine and husband Roy, their grandson's epic win against Frenchman Jo-Wilfred Tsonga that made him the first Briton to reach Wimbledon final in 74 years, was nothing less that extra-ordinary. According to a report in Scottish website dailyrecord.co.uk, Shirley has been in London the whole of last week, cheering Andy. "Andy's worked so hard. We're so proud. I'm thrilled to bits for him," she said. "We were in London all last week but we said we'd go back if he made the final, so we're making plans. We wouldn't miss it for the world."
Parents Judy and Willie as well as girlfriend Kim Sears have also been cheering for the 25-year-old player who has now received praise from all corners of Britain, including Prime Minister David Cameron who said he 'may' attend the final match. Downing Street has already announced that the Scottish flag will be unfurled while the match is on.
So as Britain waits with baited breath for their hero to rise at home after decades, it is only proper that a legendary champion at the other end of the court should stand in the way.
